Just a brief note to let folks know that our good friend Blister Sister will be celebrating her birthday this weekend (Saturday 1 August) at the Hikers Welcome Hostel in Glencliff, thanx to the great kindness of our friends who run the place. We should be there most of the weekend with good times and great food for anyone who'd like to come by. Hope to see some of you there!
Of course, considering her venerable years, one would be surprised that she is finding this occasion worth celebrating, but we intend to have a good time nevertheless.
Ha ha. She ain't old like you.
Happy Birthday Blister Sister!!

Best hiker food I ever had was at Glencliff, at a restaurant in town. It's called "poutine". Handcut, long french fries, covered with cheese curd and beef gravy. That and a pitcher is the real Hiker Heaven.

Wolf:
Since you asked are evidently concerned:
I don't know if you've ever been to Hikers Welcome. After all, you don't get up this way very often, and you profess to hate hostels.
But just so you know, the proprietor, a long-distance hiker, permits responsible consumption of alcohol, by adults, on his property.
So yes, I suspect alcohol will be "involved" at this event, tho neither Blister or myself plan to supply it or furnish it to every guest, tho we may certainly make exceptions to certain folks and friends who show up. This is one of the things that hosts generally do when giving a party, Wolf. And people of course are welcome to bring their own refreshments along. But throwing a massive beer blast for dozens of hikers? Um, no, that's not what we're doing, and anyone who expects otherwise might want to make other plans for the weekend.
Once again, Wolf, I must say that your new embracing of moderation and a temperate is refreshing, and I hope this new philosophy makes you a happy man.
Thanx for sharing.

Wolf:
We will indeed have fun, and we both wish you guys were up here.
Maybe we'll see you in Gettysburg in October for the ALDHA Gathering? Jester and I could use a Southern perspective for our battlefield walk, and while he's a great tour guide, the perspective I had in mind was not South Philadelphia.
Hope to see you there.

we'll be in gettysburg
Thanks for the best wishes guys!!!
I wish I had a big hike planned for this upcoming 40th year, oh well, unless someone wants to finance my next adventure??? Doesn't hurt to put it out there. At least I can look forward to some possible changes in the career.
Anyway...what Jack also forgot to mention is that this is a combination of festivities. Phat Chaps Birthday is just a few days after mine, this is the 3rd time we have arranged to get together and celebrate. What better way than with trail family.
I have never been really big on the birthday thing, however over the years, each trail I have hiked, I can remember exactly what I was doing, where and with who. With the exception of maybe the 4th of July, all the other thru hiking trail days seem to blend together. For me, this weekend as is this week is more work than celebration, hopefully I can ring in some good dishwashers once the feed is over.
Thanks again everyone!

May not be near a computer tomorrow, as the plans are to square away things at home ASAP and then hit the supermarket and drive up to Glencliff.
In any case, I hope some of you who are local or nearby consider dropping by for part or all of the weekend, and I look forward to seeing some of you there.
And for those who can't make it, remember that there's always next week....the Long Trail festival in Rutland on Saturday the 8th, with food, music, a trail work project, surprise guests, etc., should be a great time.
Hope to see some of you there!!

Well it's coming up on 11 o'clock here in Glencliff, taking a break before firing up the grill one last time. Fed around 25 hikers today before losing count, Blister really pulled out the stops in the kitchen, with stuffed mushroom caps, pulled pork, roasted sweet corn, sweet potato salad being the four most popular things, tho the other 20-odd entrees seemed to have found homes as well. Best part was when people walked in who had no idea about what was going on, which makes it all worthwhile. Really good crowd today, and some great eaters, honestly, some of these kids were acting like the Russians were marching up the highway and they were never gonna see food again. Oh well, all for now, gonna top the lads off with another 1500 calories before bed. Then we get to do it all over again tomorrow starting at breakfastime, plus there's a work project here at the hostel, so it looks like a busy Sunday.
Back to Hanover briefly, then off to Rutland for the next go-round at the Long Trail Festival.
And after that, we actually get to go hiking, which I'm really looking forward to, especially as the sun has actually decided to finally make an appearance. Last time there was a "Year Without Summer" this profound, it was after Tambora blew up in April of 1815 and no, I was not out hiking that year, but I swear, the past two months must have been just as bad.
Anyway, thanx much to Packrat and Gary at Hikers Welcome for being such gracious hosts; hope to see some of you in a week in Rutland.
