I am leaving next Friday to do this hike. The trial guide shows several water sources as I leave Devils Fork Gap and do the initial climb. I would rather go with very little initial water if this is true and drink along the climb. Anybody have current water info on this hike?

Choco Taco mentioned Big Bald was a bit low places. But it seems to be rainy around Erwin TN recently. Family in Tenn tell me its been short but strong bursts of rain. Usually locals will leave water caches at Sams Gap during the crowd.

Sugarloaf Branch with a small waterfall runs along trail until reach the top of the ridgeline. From Spivey Gap to Erwin, you won't see a whole lot of water except at Flattop and No Business.

I can't comment on that exact section, but I was a little South (SBF to Hot Springs) of there a couple of weeks ago. The water in that section was plentiful.

Ok here is the water sitiuation prior to todays torrential downpours. A friend of mine is out on that section now getting drenched. From Sams Gap up to Big Bald it was a bit dry but it has been raining quite a bit today. The water in the books is basically on trail but I would water up at the campsite on the climb north. When you get to the "board" at the base of teh bald, before the last jump up there is a blue blaze, marked well. Pay attention to the double blue blaze or you will continue up to the parking lot. We were there last week and no water was running from a piped springs. It should be now. But yes the campsite about halfway up should have water. I have always had issues with water in this section, just camel up when you can because the top has none and it a bit of a haul to more water past the bald. Have fun

Yea until recently it has dried up a bit. The past few days have seen quite a bit of rain.
