I’ve just gotten back into camping after a 30-year lapse. I took my first trip to Pharaoh lake with completely borrowed equipment and loved it. I did realize that I’m not a teenager any more (47) so I need to lighten the load. I’ve been looking at packs and have settled on packs in the 3000 cu inch to 3500 cu inch size. The remaining question is do I go with a frame or not.

Thoughts…

Ah yes, I have been down your road exactly. I bought and tried a lot of packs, and for the most part use framed packs (by ULA or Gossamer Gear) now, since i"m usually having to carry a lot of water, or extra scout gear. But I still have a couple of frameless packs from GoLite (Jam2, Pinnacle) that I use when I'm sure I won't have to overload them. You can never have too many packs. Or tents. Or sleeping bags. Or......

I have switched from frames to frameless and then back to frames. I find it easier to pack a frame pack then it is a frameless pack. I did however get to where I could pack my frameless pack to make it very comfortable but then after hiking for a few days something would get dirty or wet or something else and I couldn't pack it the way I had intended too and thus couldn't pack it like it needed to be.

As all the experienced people on this site will tell you...get your gear first, THEN decide what type of pack you will need. Good luck! :)
