I've been reading through the stove posts and see that some folks are using kevlar thread for priming wicks.

It also occurs to me that setting an alcohol stove on top of a piece of nomex would be a good thing because the stove itself gets so hot.

Turns out that both of these materials are commonly used in hobby rocketry. I don't want to inadvertently spam the forum, so if you need a source for kevlar cord and/or nomex, send me a PM and I'll send you the link. I've dealt with the business before, and they're good people.

Moderator, if this post isn't appropriate please delete it. If it's ok to post the link, let me know and I'll update this post.

Tinny at Minibull Stoves in Maine sells the wick you want. You don't need kevlar to set any alcohol stove I've ever used on. I use a piece of "oven liner" like MSR uses for windscreens to set my alcohol stove on.

Another source for materials is never a bad thing to know about. Thanks.

I was saying that the nomex cloth might be worth considering as a heat shield. I've used a piece of it taped up to protect the wall while using a torch to do copper pipe plumbing. Granted, it won't reflect the heat up like oven liner, but it won't transfer the heat down to the surface the stove is sitting on either.

The nomex would be overkill, the bottom of the stove gets too hot to touch but it doesn't get that hot. Don't bother trying to find that wick cheaper than Tinny at Minibull sells it, I looked.
