I think you did the same thing I did and clicked on "Mid State Trail noted for national audience (http://news.google.com/news/url?fd=R&sa=T&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pennlive.com%2Foutdoors%2Fpat riotnews%2Findex.ssf%3F%2Fbase%2Fsports%2F12490800 17111800.xml%26coll%3D1&usg=AFQjCNFXVuoToGDoeEGNIbyfERO86sq6_Q)" which is not the actual link. Anyone know why the MST is measured in kilometers and not miles?

Anyone know why the MST is measured in kilometers and not miles?

Because the MST was built by men and women wise in the ways of science who realize it's a better system, are not afraid of math and know how to do conversions.:welcome

Furthermore, it's another way in which Pennsylvania is leading where others choose to cling to the past. I love history, but I am proud to know the MST is measured in meters, thousands of them.

I agree that it's a better system. I had a hard time returning to the US customary measurement system after living overseas for 5 years. Still, why a metric trail in a non-metric country? I don't get it...

From the MST website...

"Metrication is a patriotic measure designed to help end our cultural isolation and ease our chronic balance of payments problems."

Apparently I was visiting MSTA's website (http://hike-mst.org/) at the same time you were and was about to link their answer to the FAQ regarding use of the metric system when I read your post. Doesn't everyone know MST really stands for Metric System Trail.;)

Someday we will go metric (http://www.rps.psu.edu/notebook/metric.html) and we would be better off today had we done so in the 1970s.

It's hard enough sometimes to find the right socket or wrench. Why we choose to complicate matters by buying twice the number of wrenches and sockets and sorting through the clutter to find what's needed makes no sense to me. I'm at a loss to explain how it makes us stronger or better, but I do see how it contributes to inefficiency.

A subtle but fun link. The new color maps are all metricated too, with scale of kilometers and 1000 meter UTM grid, except for the physical sheet size.

nice :) it really doesnt matter to me...i use them interchangeably in my job every single day.....as well as lbf vs. N, in-lbf vs. N-m, in-lbf vs. N-mm, kg vs lbf vs N, etc etc.
