View Full Version : Blue Baked Ceramic mug
Those dark blue "spotted" ceramic mugs...can I put them onto a direct flame?
I know it's steel under the ceramic...anyone have a bad result who would like to warn me before I hurt myself?
The coating may offgas harmful fumes and leach stuff into your drink. I'd stick with single walled stainless or titanium. Aluminum works, too, but holds heat almost too well and the rim tends to stay hot longer than the other two metals.

The steel will flex and cause the coating to flake off. Leads to rusty cups.

I've been doing it for years. I guess that's what is wrong with me.
Seriously, I replaced mine this year cuz it had a little rust spot inside it.

i used one on my hike. made a nice formed lid with triple folded aluminum foil. works great in campfires and the outside of mine turned black as night.

why wouldn't they work over a fire, they make their pots out of the same stuff.
They work fine for me,some chipping but not bad. I also use them in the house, same issues there too.
I've used them a lot and never had any problem from the flames. Where I have had problems is dropping them as it may hit a rock and chip the enamel causing it to rust. Also a bad idea to try to use one to put a food bag line over a branch. I did this and after a few missed attempts my mug was dented and chipped all over.
