We are planning a brief section hike from oustide Roanoke some 80-100 miles north to the Wolfe Shelter area. Our first experience hiking in the VA area in September. Any updates on water availability, bears, or trouble with other hikers? Also wondering of cell phone can contact shuttles in the E-W roads that cross the AT, and recommendations of reliable shuttles for the trip back to Roanoke.
Thanks!:-?
OK, almost 2 weeks and no suggestions. any better ideas?:-?
i would suspect that water is okay along this stretch. i haven't been out there recently, but in my experience hiking along this stretch last year(august and sept.)water was fine. i think there was only one shelter without a good source and that was right after long mtn. wayside at rt. 60?
as far as bears. i hope yer' lucky enough to see one! good luck!
you prolly' won't see too many other hikers along this stretch although you might see some SOBO'S.
check the ATC website for reliable shuttles.
last but not least, good luck and have fun!

My experience is that if you have Verison you will be fine but if you have ATT/Cingular your ability to get service is few and far between. Unfortunately I have the latter.
