Very straight forward with a caveat,

NO Slim Jim.

I am looking for the best tasting with the least Sodium. Example Pepperoni sticks last more than 60 days unrefrigerated! yet its full of fat, salt, and you won't starve eating it on the trail.

Here is an inexspensive beef stick that tastes of beef and is not dry, Marketed by Walgreens - the sodium is high, but clearly tastes better than a nasty Slim Jim.... Don't Pm me....I buy Slim Jims for Rugby,,,, My dog.

http://img.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/357788.jpg2.75 oz of protein.

I like the organic beef jerkey from Trader Joe's. I eat enough garbage while I'm hiking. I figure the "organic" in the jerkey offsets this (I know I'm just fooling myself, but please don't shake my fragile personal fantasy world :D).

Yea, I stopped with the Slim Jims after almost eating a patch of hog hair in one. Am looking for a sub myself.

Farmer Vincent's fritters. But like hot dogs, don't ask what's in 'em. ;)

Here's a review on the Trader Joe's. They weren't nuts about the flavor, but they liked the fact that it's organic and inexpensive.

I like hikory stick by hikory farms. It is summer sausage, keeps well and not too bad for you.

Definitely Gourmet Meats of Texas! Delicious, nice texture (not too tough) and fresh.

I found that making my own is worth the time and effort. Cheaper, tastes better, and you control what goes in it

I got addicted to Slim Jim Beef 'n Cheese Sticks on this years thru-hike. They were even better dipped in honey flavored peanut butter. Of course, I tend to like ice cream and beer in combination also- Yum!

Instead of water, you pour hot coffee into your oatmeal, problem solved!

I usually make my own jerky, but if I want commercially produced I go with Robertson's. www.robertsons-hams.com/ (http://www.robertsons-hams.com/)
