:sun POST - GATHERING WORKTRIP * * * * *
Here's your chance to help make the Appalachian Trail Museum a REALITY!
Although the construction on the Old Mill building across the road from the
Ironmaster's Hostel,Pine Grove Furnace State Park ( ...also across the other road from the store which is famous for the 1/2 GAL. CLUB ) has not yet begun , the building needs a good interior cleaning ~ here is your chance to participate in the actual "hands-on" creation of the AT Museum and also enjoy, not only the company of other like-minded hikers, but a
FREE MEAL ! IN ADDITION ***** IF there are more volunteers than are needed at the Old Mill building, then the spill-over will give a good cleaning to Ironmaster's Hostel ( ~ NOTE : Sanne"Readyhiker" has said that if that happens " There is a good possibilty that everyone will be able to stay overnight in the hostel 4 FREE " ! * * * * * ) .
SIGN - UP FOR THIS WORKTRIP AT GATHERING HIKER CENTRAL
ps note > z poss Takoma Tedd will provide the evening's entertainment :)

Sounds like a great idea Wolf, but when you post something about an "event", it sure helps if you let people know the date!! :D

Jack, thanks for catching the oversight ( ~ I suppose there are lots that do not know that the post-gathering worktrip is always the Monday after the Gathering weekend ). Therefore, to be clear about the date, the worktrip is scheduled for Monday,Oct.12 at the Old Mill building in Pine Grove Furnace State Park,Pennsylvania . NOTE : PLEASE sign-up at the HIKER CENTRAL desk at the Gathering ( that way we can get a count ).

Registration at the campsite begins Friday morning. One might, perhaps might be able to get there Thursday night with permission, but you'd probably want to check this out ahead of time.
Details on event can be found at www.aldha.org, including E-Mail addresses for event organizers, in case anyone has questions they can't get answered on the website page.

think im gonna skip out on the Gathering and hit up the South RUCK instead???? (considering my location)
Hi everyone,
A rare post from me... Yes, the Gathering is fast approaching. It is Oct. 9-11. There are a lot of great things lined up for the weekend, and a lot of pre-Gathering buzz out there. Pre-registration is at a 5-or more year high. And that is very, very good for the continued health and success of the Gathering.
I have one huge favor to ask the Whiteblaze community: We have two thru-hikers planning to finish on Katahdin on Oct. 8, the day before the Gathering begins. They are also both planning to present workshops during the Gathering, and one of them, I hope, will be there on time to give one of the testimonials Friday night. If so, it could be a very special moment as far as testimonials go.
BUT, they need a ride. From Maine to Gettysburg. In one day.
I know that's asking a lot, and I would do it myself if I didn't have to be in Gettysburg by Wednesday to help get ready for the Gathering. (I'm sort of organizing it this year, as you may have guessed by now. lol.)
So if anyone can help out with this, please let me know. My email is aldha@aol.com. I check it frequently all day long (and into the wee hours, too), so I can get back to you ASAP with the details. The hikers are willing to pay for gas. Heck, I am willing to pay for gas!
Just let me know. THANKS, and we'll see you folks in Gettysburg the weekend after next.

For the past few years, when the Gathering has been in West Virginia, or more recently, at the excellent new location at Gettysburg College, a good-sized bunch of us has gotten together the night before at the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon. This gives us the chance to spend some time with friends we don't see that often, as well as filling up the place on a slow week, which helps our friends Pat and Vicki who own the joint. And then it's an easy drive to Gettysburg the next day. Anyway, if any of you are attending the event or live nearby, come join us Thursday evening 8 October.
Should be a good group of folks and I hope to see some of you there.

Hi Jack, glad to see this post. Not sure at this point what my schedule is that day/evening but most likely I will be working at the Unimart (right behind the Doyle Hotel) during the day. And then close by the Doyle (since I live a block away!) part of the evening. It is a pool match night. I am the captain of the team.
So, anyway, hope to get to see you and others that day/evening.
Also, Baggins is here and planning on attending her first Gathering. She would also like to help in the preparations if needed. But I am certain she will not want to wait until I can go to the Gathering after work on Saturday. I told her she will want to be there for the opening ceremonies on Friday. I have always enjoyed them. If she does not find a ride to help with the preparations the few days before I hope someone will give her a spot in their vehicle on Friday. She doesn't need much space since she is so tiny!

I like the line about her not taking up a lot of space.
Have you considered UPS or FedEx? :D
A big carton, a few air holes and copious bubble wrap should suffice. Maybe a large cat carrier would do the trick.
Oh, hiker tip: Make sure there's a very clear and legible return adddress on the box in case of problems, refused delivery, etc.
Otherwise, this may end badly.

:welcome APPALACHIAN TRAIL MUSEUM
I thought I'd pass along this note from the ATMS (A.T. Museum Society ) to anyone interested . This is from the desk of Larry Luexenberg, ATMS president ( email: luxenberg@lexingtonave.com ) :
" Friends of the A.T. Museum,
In conjunction with the ALDHA Gathering at Gettysburg College, the ATMS will hold a meeting at 2:30 in Room 260 of the college student union. All of our meetings are open and we encourage your participation and comments. The ATMS will also have an exhibit table all weekend, a silent auction and raffle, sponsor several workshops on Saturday, and a cleanup worktrip at the Old Mill at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12. In addition, we expect to have a table at the Appalachian Trail Community Forum in Carlisle,PA on the evening of Oct. 26.
We welcome any contributions to the silent auction. They need not be hiker related. Also, for the worktrip Monday, we welcome any cleaning supplies. ~ Regards ~ Larry "

As for the Appalachian Trail Museum post Gathering clean-up...I am sending food up with you guys from Gettysburg. So if you can make it, there will be grub :D And thanks to Red Wolf for his unselfish, never-ending energy.
A special thank you to Larry Luxenberg, and for making this AT Museum dream soon become reality. Opening day will be some party :banana

Just want to re-iterate, especially for the new folks, that this is a really great event, especially for those thinking about or actively planning a long backpacking trip, especially one on the A.T. Unlike Trail Days, which is more of a social/party event, the Gathering is educational: There are dozens of lectures, presentations, workshops, etc., all dealing with long-distance trekking, including some led by recent (i.e. this past year's) thru-hikers. Several presentations each year are aimed squarely at folks planning to thru-hike the A.T. the following year.
I attended one of these weekends back in 1994 before my first long hike, and I've only missed one of them since. This is a really fun, really useful event, and I hope to see many of you there.
For details, including an idea of this year's program and what to expect, go to www.aldha.org

See you at "church" for a "Ling" and a large order of fries Thursday evening.
Hi everyone...
Just wanted to clear up something about early arrivals at Gettysburg for the Oct. 9-11 ALDHA Gathering . . .
You can arrive Thursday at the campground if you wish, but not any earlier than that, thanks. We are only paying the farmer to use his field from Friday through Monday morning, Oct.9-12. He is, in effect, giving us a freebie on Thursday for those who have to help set up and get ready, and we don't want to abuse his generosity. We'd love to pay for use of his property all week, but our meager budget doesn't allow for that. Believe me, I have stretched that $10-per-person fee for the entire weekend as far as it will go. LOL.
If you arrive Thursday, we ask that you pitch in to help with the packet-stuffing party on campus, probably in the College Union Building, or CUB, from about 5 or 6 p.m onward. If you can be there Thursday, let me know at aldha@aol.com ... It's actually a lot of fun and very easy work. The more hands, the easier it is.
One more thing: pray for good weather! Thanks!

I just got this new kerosene lantern for the Gathering. Its a W. T. Kirkman #2 "Champion". Galvanized like the one below but with a frosted globe and a hooded reflector. 20 candle power with a 27 hour burn time.
Better than a Coleman lantern.

Assuming the ground is pretty dry to begin with, which it should be since we have not had real significant rain the last several days, it should be OK. But I say that without knowing the actual field in question.
