i am officially going to war, this morning while outside i moved a pair of gloves i left out over night and revealed the hiding spot of a 6 inch long baby garter snake, he took a long look at me the slithered off into the bushes. This is the third time he has sneaked up on me. this demon must be caught. was looking at traps online that have scent bait for snakes.. and after the snake wriggles inside it gets caught in a fly paper like glue coating the bottom of the trap i was thinking about setting out like 9 or 12 dozen of them..anyone have an idea on how much these cost?

OMG - Capt, you have baby garter snakes! you are an official Grand Daddy.

Guess what they are harmless and they eat mice..... best leave them all alone... If you catch them ship them to me. (free of course)

Yup Capt you're mad.http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/02/03/business/0204-MAD.2.jpg

the snake is harmless, actually helpful Do me a favor and concentrate on the mice in the shelter. I thought that mice were nocturnal and didn't cherish their visibility during day stops at the shelter this year.

C'mon Captain. It was a Garter snake. I suppose you also think the AT should be paved and be open to motorcycles and every black bear wants to harm you too? Turn off the TV, PLEASE! Embrace knowledge and wisdom NOT fear and ignorance. And, why all the hostility towards animals everyone? Isn't this their home too? Where is the respect for life and harmony among all creatures?

I remember a cool dark night when I was planting some shrubs into containers. As I reached into a big plastic bag to get a handful of soil I was startled to get a handful of something damp and hairy with claws and teeth. As it started to come alive and squirm around I stepped back thinking - what is it? Just then a baby oppossum, no bigger than my clenched fist, wriggled out from inside of the soil bag popping it's pink nose out looking just as startled as I was. It was just seeking a warm place to stay for the night. Don't we all want that? Nothing was attempting to threaten or harm me and I strongly doubt Captain the Garter smake was meaning you any harm either!

Was getting some wood under cover yesterday. Grabbed a stick, and a bat "squeaked" at me. Pink little rabid mouth. Startled the cheese out of me.

But it was cool to watch it crawl down into the pile.

Be nice to snakes. They are your from a distance friends.

Garter snakes are not slimey at all. They are dry and kind of scaley.

There is a picture in a picture album at my parents house from around 1982 of my little sister holding 4 or 5 baby garter snakes with a big smile on her face. I was around 11, my sister 4 or 5. We had a mulch pile in the corner of the property and there were 2 rotting straw bales on it. I knew the snakes were under the bales for a while and handeled them every time I checked on them. One day we showed Mom and she got the camera out and snapped the pic. If I remember, I'll try to find it and scan it in.

Snakes, even venomous ones, are our friends.

When I take people on hikes (I am a park naturalist), often I hear stories of them killing snakes. I then relish in informing them that it is, in fact, ILLEGAL to kill a snake (by the majority of state laws).

If you are a healthy adult, a bite from any of the venomous snakes in (native to) Ohio would not generally be lethal, even without treatment. It would, however, be very unpleasant.

I do understand your fear of snakes, many people have it.

I would ask that you please don't kill the garters around your house. They are eating the Japanese beetles that eat the plants in your landscaping.

I should add that if you are seeing rattlesnakes, copperheads, or black snakes. You have a rodent problem, not a snake problem.

So? In the South, you're going to have to come up with a better reason than that. I don't have a problem with snakes in general, and recognize the vital role they play, but if they show up around my house, my person or my loved ones, I kill them...especially if I know they are venomous. The law can say whatever it wants. The same goes for a Coyote, Bobcat, Scorpion, Alligator, etc... It's nothing personal.

I know that's not the politically correct answer, but I don't care either.

I guess I was wrong about this site. This diffinitly is not a nature friendly site. I guess you guys would love to chop all the trees down so you can see the forest? Right?

I have worked as a reptle keeper for 5 years. I have been around everything from little earth snakes (you call them grass snakes, probably think they will kill you too, huh!!) to mambas, cobras, tiger snakes, etc, etc,.. There is NO WAY, NOWAY a little garter snake is going to hurt you. Being a backpacker site and people that SUPPOSEDLY loves nature, this is a crying shame. Why don't ya just stay in and lock the doors and close your windows and HOPE to GOD nothing from the outside gets in.

I really love nature and very happy to be a round the wildlife that walk among us. That is the reason I go out and hike in thefirst place. To know there is still some creatures out there, no matter how small or how different they maybe, makes me want to go out even more.

This is ridiculous:(:(:(

At first I was going to post a funny story relating to your post, but after I saw Foxtrots post, thats what sat me off. It just dosn't seem a good way to teach children, and people in general, the wilderness.

If I am not mistaken, there is a plaque somewhere that reads, "for one seeking fellowship with the wilderness." HHmmmmm.!!!

Anyway I know people have their phobias, my phobia is people who claim they love being outdoors, then kill animals and brag about it with other people who claim to love being outdoors and ......well, I'll stop there.

I know there are some good well mindfull folks here on WB, I have actually met a couple of you, so that post wasn't for the majority. It was directed to people like Foxtrot who kills everything he see's then brags about it. Maybe he should go and join that other group that thinks the AT should be paved abd the trees should be knocked down and........well enough said. I am going back hiking, and I don't need a gun to hike with. I am in THEIR world.

I found this little guy in Ohio, and as you can see he is pretty vicious. I don't think you'll find any cotton mouths in Ohio and Copperheads and Rattlers are few and far between. I think in general if you leave snakes alone (even the ones in your yard) that they will leave you alone.

Hold on there Graywolf. You read WAAAYYYY too much into my (one) post. I didn't say I love to kill animals...I just made the comment that if they come around something I value highly and constitute a risk to do any harm, I have no problem killing them...law or no law. I didn't say I enjoyed it, I just have no problem doing it. That's it...nothing more and nothing less. Period. End of discussion.

How that logically gets widened to a something far more sinister is a mystery to me. My guess is that you are guilty of stereotyping an individual based on one post. If you think that my one comment constitutes the sum total of my views on ALL THINGS WILDLIFE, then you are rather narrow minded. Notice that I said "IF". You have never met me as I have never met you. You don't know squat about me and I don't know squat about you. I would NEVER dare to make similar comments about anyone from just one post. I would expect the same courtesy from you.

You have no idea what I teach my children about wildlife and the environment. You have no idea what my background is or my experiences are. Please do not rush to small, closed minded judgments. I respectfully ask you to be more open minded and tolerant next time.

I am many things and very tough to pigeonhole into one stereotype or another. But that didn't stop you from trying.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about this or make any enemies here, but I can't in good conscience sit around while someone throws insulting comments around about me without responding.

Hey Foxtrot,

It's all good here, just jumped to conclusions too much. SEE, even I have my phobias. It just soemtime gets under my skin when I see/ hear people, (anywhere, and I have seen it alot) talk about ther love for he outdoors and then tey turn around and kind a slash it. I guess you just hit a bone and I lashed out on it. Thats all.

Here is the story I was going to post:

One day I was at the zoo and we got a call from a lady who swore left and right there was a very big Boa Constrictor in her back yard and she was afraid to let her poodle out for fear it would eat her poodle. So, they gave me the call and I grab our boa stick, thick gloves, and a capture box and throw it into the truck. When I get there she is at the door and I till you, this woman is shaken. I said to myself, this woman looks like she is going to have a heart attack.
I go into the backyard and I ask her where did she last see the boa? She said it is in the garden under a overturned flower pot. I go and see the flower pot and when I turn it over, you are not going to believe this, just hang on get your thoughts together, think a bout a large boa under a flower pot. Well, ok enough with the suspense, it was a baby corn snake not only 1 foot long. I about cried and cracked up at the same time. Here I am with an 8 foot long boa stick, a boa capture box, heavy chainmail gloves and starring down at a 1 foot baby corn snake. I asked her, lady, where is the boa?

Hope that cheers your day.:banana

Thats what I call them, They were actually gloves used for handling sharp knives. When a boa and much more a python gets to a considerable length, there teeth get pretty long, and can do a lot of damage. So we wore them to protect our hands.

I know what the next question well be, and yes it came to my mind several times, what about protection from the rest of the body? Well, my answer to that is, call Human Resourses at the Dallas Zoo and maybe they can help.

i heard if a boa wraps you you get it just below the head and squeeze off its air supply and in a panic it will let you go ideal situation ofcourse
