I will be up in Baxter State Park next week and will be camping and dayhiking near the birches for a couple of days. At least one day, I plan to do the west to east traverse of the mountain via the knifes edge, AT and Helon Taylor. I expect to be making at least one or two runs in to town during the period. Obviously pizza would be a good thing, unfortunately the closest pizza place is about 1 hour away so it wont be very hot when I get there (but most likely appreciated). I do have a cooler so ice cream is a viable options. I wont be able to take orders, so I am looking for suggestions on what (legal) things I can pick up in town and drop off.
I may have some spare spaces at my site but infortunately its going to be a last minute thing.
I obviously plan to keep and eye out to give someone a ride out of the park when I leave but considering its Labor day weekend there will probably be more rides than riders.

To close the loop on this thread, I stopped by the Birches two nights last week with a bucket of cold beer (Sam Adams). I had my grill, but I didnt have time to cook anything due to having to meet up with some folks elsewhere. The first night there were only three college age folks at the site, apparently the day before there was a big crowd and the local hostel in Millinocket appears to have a lot of folks that stay with them and catch a shuttle in the morning. The second night there were one couple from Indianna, an older couple, 3 college age and one other older hiker. Most appreciated the beer. If I did it again, I would bring a few sodas.
I encoutered the thru hikers from the first night on the summit the next day. They were planning on taking the knifes edge down on just about a perfect day.
In general the folks who got to Baxter in the last 7 days have had about as good weather as it gets in Maine. Some of them did mention a nasty black fly hatch near Abol bridge as the walked along the river but by the time they were up the stream a bit the bugs went away. It was so nice, I did baxter and the knifes edge twice in 3 days. I also got to revisit the Hunt Trail (AT) after 29 years, boy the gateway section is still quite a boulder scramble despite the relocations around most of the steel bars. I will stick to climbing up the east side of the mountain.
