I am planning a hike and after checking my supplies noticed about 8 mountain house freeze dried meals with expiration dates between 8/07 and 10/08. What is your opinion about using them? A friend said they are good for 25 years and I kind of think they are okay but don't know for sure. Thanks, Aquaman.:-?

25 years is for the #10 cans. MH claims 7 years on the pouches...

All it states is that "after 7 years a change in flavor and appearance may be noticed." Doubt if it will kill ya or make you sick, it might just taste worse than the "fresh" version.

When a new shipment of mountain house meals come in they have an expiration date of up to 7 years. I would have no problem eating meals a couple years past their expiration date. I doubt they would ever spoil unless opened.

I've eaten MH pouch meals that were older than ten years on many occasions. In the army in the late seventies and in the last few years. No problems at all.

As for taste I have no input. Germs on the other hand, I do know a little about. If the pack is still air tight and you add BOILING water, then there is nothing inside that will harm you. So they should be fine to eat, you just might not enjoy the meal as much as you would have last year.:)
There was a thru last year named Y2K. He was eating all the freeze dried foods his family stockpiled for the year 2000 calamity that never came.

Beef stew that expired in August 06 was ok, taste was a little plain. Some hot sauce would have helped. Spaghetti and meat sauce that expired in 2007 was good.
