Hi all,
Any suggestions for a nice hike in the New England area this 3 day Labor Day Weekend? A point to point (with possible transportation by means of taxi, etc.) or loop would be best. Preferably shelter camping to hopefully avoid campground crowds.

Some places I had in mind:
- section of AT in western MA (although kind of want to save it for a thru).
- Wapack Trail (only 1 shelter area so might be crowded).
- Mondanack - Sunapee Trail (kind of want to save it for a thru).

Thanks!

I think the only place for shelter on the Wapack trail is at the Windblown XC ski area, where there is a warming cabin and leantos that they rent out.http://www.windblownxc.com/Pages/accommodations.html Give them a call. However, they were pretty much destroyed in the December ice storm and are going out of business. There is an effort to keep it open as a non-profit ski area.
If you do it, PM me and if I'm around I'll shuttle you.

I haven't been on the Mondanack - Sunapee Trail except at Monadnock; it seems like it would be a nice hike.

Off the AT, there is the South Taconic Trail, Taconic Skyline and Taconic Crest trail in Western Mass/Eastern NY. There is camping at only a couple of places

Thanks for the shuttle offer Snowleopard. I plan to have a hike picked out by Wed. night. If I decide to do the Wapack, I'll let you know.

Also, I know the hikes I am currently thinking about are focused mainly in the western and central MA/NH area, but all of New England is fair game.

redseal, you know you're only about an hour from the southern end of the Wapack trail; you could do it in a series of short day hikes. If you've got the whole weekend, do western Mass or White Mtns and save the Wapack for half days.

Very true indeed. The White Mountains seem like a great option. Do you know the camping regulations by any chance?
