I found a 85%silk and 15%cashmere sweater that I think would be a good base layer for 50cents at the local thrift store. How would one wash this type of material on the trail? Some of you do have silk base layers also right? and are the hand was only and lay flat to dry. If you could please give me some tips. Thank you

Nobody wash clothing while out? Or just not the correct type of sweater?
Cold water, sink, woolite would be my guess...or for 50 cents wear it til it stinks real bad and pitch it.

I know what am I thinking it's only 50cnts I waste way more than that in a day.
If you had several "delicates" like that on you gear list, I guess it would justify the expense of detergent for a small load in the hotel/hostel sink or tub.
Thru hikers wash clothes at laundry mats in trail towns when what they're wearing starts wreaking. I'd opt for washing friendly clothing myself. One reason I gave up wool shirts a few years ago after one of mine came out of the dryer sized to fit a five year old! :( I rely on fleece and a waterproof shell, which also keeps your body heat in real well.

Leave the silk and cashmere for parlors and parlor music! :D
I have no idea why I quoted myself! :p Meant to edit the above.
Everything I take with me goes into one wash load, cold, then into one dryer. Anything that needs babying is not the right thing for my trips. I wouldn't be washing a sweater under normal circumstances until about two or three months out.
Sorry, just re-read your post. You said base layer, not sweater. Wash it with everything else.
