Intend to do a thru hopefully, AT, early start, South to North.

I have only section hiked the AT in N Ga years ago mostly in the winter.

I am questioning, with a 15dF bag, tent and bivy,

1. do I need the insulated pants at the start.

2. I really wanted to take a minima syn vest (5oz), not sure I need it, but I like them for hiking

3. Should I take an extra set of clothes, IE thoughfare superlight ?? I gut sez yes. (10 oz )

4. I have a 3.2 oz water bucket that could come in handy. It will stand up.

5. Also thought about picking up one of those 4.2oz sea to summit bag showers. Seems like it would make a good water bag/shower/food bag maybe ??

6. Driducks. I really wanted these as an extra layer when cold as I am not carrying a wind layer. I could carry a sil nylon poncho/tarp (9oz) instead and have more of a vestibule if I get rained in. 10oz driducks vs 9 oz poncho. Driducks would be better for wind. I could always start withthe driducks and toss them. I am sure they will get battered.

Also I could drop almost a pound on the tent and get a bigger vesibule if I rebuild the fly in cuben and replace the poles with carbon fiber. Not sure if I really want to do that or not.

I will be wearing - cold start.....
Top - Smartwool micro tee, Either a cashmere lightweight sweater (10 oz bargain store $4) or long silk top, wool shirt and whatever else in my list below.
Bottom - Bike shorts, silk bottoms or nothing, light wt wool pants. If very cold maybe the insul pants.

Summer
Top - Smartwool micro Tee, thorofare shirt (5oz) or other lightwieght similar shirt. Hot micro tee only or nothing.
Bottom Bike shorts and maybe thorofare or other lightweight pants.

Feet Asics Trubaco shoes.

I plan to pack with almost all of this eq all the way through.

My base weight is 13.6# to start, 12.4# when it warms up.
With 1.5# of food per day, 4# of h20, pig out at stops, that puts me at
about 21# and 20# for 2 days food and 26# and 25# with 5 days food.

I am sure I will add some more stuff later on the trail, like more hand sanitizer, bad of soap, food etc so I could see it going up a pound or two.

The first column is cold start, second column after it warms up.
I could go lighter on this stuff, but I already have everything except for a couple of items.

Thanks

Likely if your pack is old you will need a new one on the hike for sure.

Leave home: fish hooks, fire tinder, foil, signal mirror, blade, rubber bands, 2nd lighter, 2nd compass (you are most always near civilization on the AT - don't need these things in all honesty) , butterfly bandaid, Moleskin and tape (duct tape is all you need for this and repair), glue, insect repellent until later, soap , deodorant, comb (everyone smells and town is 3-4 days away, usually), water filter (switch to Aqua Mira), your cook kit seems heavy (use a alcohol stove or pocket rocket, one small titanium pot and a spork)

Clothes - need a balaclava (is that the sock hat? - but also need an insulating hat too), no scarf with balaclava, I don't like wool (too heavy), I'd go with smart wool tops and bottoms for an insulating layer in a cold start (silk is too lightweight), need some kind of insulating jacket like down. Need to say what your camp clothes are, couldn't figure it out.

Need zero degree bag for winter hiking.

>water filter (switch to Aqua Mira),

It is

>your cook kit is heavy

The entire kit is 2.5 oz. Maybe you thought it said 12.5 ??
Bag cook, alc stove, can pot, spork, 2 plastic cups etc.

> Clothes - balaclava might come in handy (is that the sock hat?
I have that listed twice I think.

> but also need an insulating hat),
I have a heavy wool cap thats great.
I have a superb hat with ear flaps I hunt in. Maybe I will take that.

>I'd go with smart wool tops and bottoms for an insulating layer in a cold start (silk is too lightweight),

Hm, already have the silk. I will get the smartwools

>need some kind of insulating jacket
Golite Salsa in the list.
http://www.prolitegear.com/golite-salsa-jacket.html

>Need to say what your camp clothes are, couldn't figure it out.
Probably the extra thorofare in the list. That would add another 10oz.

>15 degree bag is not warm enough for a winter start unless it's early March, imo.

Thats was the reason for the insul pants and wool pants, wool shirt, salsa jacket, driducks. I figure if I had too I could wear all that and survive down to zero.

13.6 lb is good for cold weather.
Sleeping gear: If you live anywhere near someplace cold, go on a short trip to test your sleeping gear and clothing at temps equal to what is normal for the AT at your start date.

"1. do I need the insulated pants at the start."
You could just stay in your sleeping bag to stay warm in camp, but I like being warm in camp without having to stay in my bag.

"2. I really wanted to take a minima syn vest (5oz), not sure I need it, but I like them for hiking" It's only 5 oz, take it and mail it home when it's not needed. Being able to adjust your clothing layers so that you are warm enough and not sweating is important when it's cold. If any parts of your clothing system help with this, it's worth a bit of extra weight.

Thanks,

I am making some changes. The salsa is going back. $54 though so it was a good deal. Great jacket, but a montbell thermawrap parka with a hood weighs the same.

I plan to start early so that was the reason for the insul pants. More for extending my bag down to zero than anything else. I can't see wearing smartwool bottoms, insul pants, wool pants on top and hiking in anything less than sub zero. Probalby overkill.

I will for sure have smartwool bottoms, med wool pants and rainducks bottoms, so in a MB #1, in a bivy, in a tent, so maybe that will be enough. I will have to think about it some more.

I really like vests. I have had one of some sort since the 70's.
Perfect for heavy duty hiking.
I will probably go ahead and order the kit.

Unfortunately my down vest does not fit anymore, urp !!!

I used a sea-to-summit pocket shower as a stuff sack for my sleeping bag. I swam across some Sierra rivers and it kept my sleeping bag dry. I only used it once as a shower to wash my hair. I think I could have washed my hair just as well with my 1 liter smartwater bottle. You wouldn't want to put food in it because eventually you'd get crumbs or maybe your powdered milk would explode or something and then your pocket shower would be a mess.
