I like the chicken stew. But the HUGE amounts of SODIUM in their "dinners" is enough to have a 'wrecking effect' on my ol' body!

I haven't had a MH in years, but when I first started backpacking thats what I ate. Lasagna, chili, and beef strogonoff were my favorites.

that is a great one too. I like to ad some mashed potatoes and a pouch of small shrimp to it and thicken it up a little.

Yes, that Raspberry Crumble is hard to beat.

Back before I started making my own meals there are a MH pork dish with pineapple that wasn't too bad.

Chili Mac is my favorite. Because of the way my body reacts to it, it is also my hiking friends' least favorite.

A free one. The stuff is way to costly to have a favorite, although considering my tastebuds, it wouldn't make much sense anyway.

Mountain House lasagna; but I really prefer Mary Jane over MH

My favorite Mountain House meal is the one I find for free in the Hiker boxes of most national parks.

Buy them in quanity for a discount or sometimes find them discounted at outfitters when they start nearing the expiration date. I"ve bought MH Lousiana Red Beans and Rice(2 person serving) at REI on discount for as little as $1.33 per serving. That's not such a bad deal!

Not that I only eat desserts, but since yesterday I've been trying to remember who makes Apple Brown Betty...it's not MH I don't think???

:sunI cant believe no one has mentioned Pasta Primavera. Add a foil pack of shrimp or crab meat and you are eating like a king.

Haven't had one in a while, but shrimp creole is the one I remember, and that's because it's associated with a true trail magic story.

I know technically why they have expiration dates, but do they really expire...I don't think so. :)

They're a bit cost prohibitive for me, tho I like the lasagna, tho I know folks who make it better. :D

Once in a blue moon, you find Mountain House dinners in a hiker box, affirming the fact that the best MH meal is a free one.

Been a long time. I ate so many of them back in the day they started tasting the same.

Still, I always had a thing for Natural High's Turkey and Gravy. http://richmoor.com/details/item21.html Didn't take me long though to realize I could make it cheaper, better tasting and bigger portioned ;-)

I gotta agree with Sarbar. I bought her book and haven't looked back since, although I will admit to buying the occasional Enertia TrailFoods meal. With freezer bag cooking, I make whatever I want dirt cheap, portioned how I want it and it tastes a hell of a lot better. Bottom line? IMO, there is no best MH meal. It's all crap.

I would have to go with Chili Mac

Beef Stroganoff.

I also haven't bought any since switching to FBC.

Pretty much ditto. The pasta primavera is good... I make all my own meals now. One Pan Wonders (lots of FBC style meals in there). :)

Beef Stew is my favorite

KrazyL
09-26-2009, 03:07
I like the beef stew and chile mac. both are pretty good, but I recently decided that it was cheaper and easier to do FBC meals. So..... I'm in the stages of testing a lot of them and trying to figure out which ones i like the best.

Very nice post Pootz!

My answer is anything other than the MH Stew.
