Community service. 20 hours a week for the next 5 years. They should build things for free so they learn how difficult it is. Their first job can be helping on the new Wayah tower.

I hate to say it, but much of my anger at the fiends got diluted when I learned the authorities are going to charge them with having and using "weapons of mass destruction." What a crock!

Still, where is "caning" when you need it?

Is that worse than arson? Where do they rate on the felony scale??

They are definately at the top of the dumb criminal scale.

It was just last April that someone pulled a radio tower down on Wine Spring Bald less than a mile away.

1st stupid thing they did was to vandalize federal property.

2nd stupid thing was to video tape themselves.

3rd stupid thing was to post it on YouTube.

How dumb can you get...

I work for the state and I would have been steaming if I had to work this case.

I am just glad it has been raining all this time and the tower and surrounding forest didn't catch fire.

This incident goes a long way towards confirming two theories I have:

1)if you need to look up directions on how to make a bomb on the internet, particularly a Molotov Cocktail for crissakes, you are probably too stupid to be making bombs, and

2) teenagers are idiots.

At least 300 miles or prison. Under supervision, of course.

they did this at least five times and videotaped it for youtube? That's top investigative work by the gendarmes?

Jester2000

LoL thanks for your theory number 2

No problem! I base that mostly on my and my friends' bahavior as teens, and a couple of years of teaching.

While there are many exceptions whom I know (AT thru-hiker Kirby is definitely one), you've got to admit that generally speaking it's true.

I wonder what, or who turned them over to the law? I mean there had to have been someone on youtube who knew where the tower was and probably turned them over to the law?

Doesn't seem that way. If you read the newspaper article, they were caught at a roadblock (not sure why that was set up); evidence of their repeated bombings was found through interviews and confirmed by evidence of their video camera.

So despite what some people might think, there actually was some good investigative work going on.

I don't care if they are teenagers, give them the max they can get. I let alot of things go but messing with my woods and messing with history just P me off and there is no obvious reasons for their aggression on a tower. I work at a morgue so I don't have as much compassion for people as I probably should cause I see it all and people aren't nice.

Larry, according to the article, they went through a traffic checkpoint and an officer noticed a cut Forest Service gate lock in the car. Escalated from there.

from their pictures they look like the 'reject society' types. they just chose the wrong society to reject.

i remember a few years ago i saw on TV some young teens who would burn entire houses that were for sell in developed neighborhoods out west, then they would film them from the distance.

Hope they get the book thrown at them. What bugged me is how the reporter in the TV news piece refered to those involved as "young boys" when they are nothing of the sort, but young men/adults.

Oh yeah, and play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Not to argue, but why desecrate the "new" tower with their worthless, scummy, impotent teabags? I say feed 'em to some maggots instead.

Is this the thing in VT? I know that a shelter there was set on fire, and they definitely think it was arson, and they're trying to find any info on who might have done it. This isn't the same thing, right?

All structures on the AT should be torched.
Torch 'em with extreme prejudice and omit nothing, and I fully expect all the shelter-haters to support me.
They're hypocrites if they don't.

Why? I personally like shelters. If you don't like 'em, don't use 'em.
