View Full Version : Bug Netting?
If you use an 8'x10' tarp as your (emergency) shelter, how do you keep the bugs off at night? I am a warm sleeper, so during the summer when it's hot I just sleep on top of my bag or pad with just shorts on. I am assuming you use netting or something to cover yourself with at night? What's good to get, and where can I get it?

I use a bug bivy made by Outdoor Research. It fully encloses you and has a waterproof bottom for protection against wet/damp ground and a hoop to keep the netting off the face. Simple, less expensive pull over the top of your head nettings area also available, see campmor catalog. You could also just buy some netting and make your own.
I'm assuming you don't use a footprint or ground cloth under the bug bivy, right?

Or just use a bag liner and head net. It was rare at least when I was on the AT that it got so hot I had to sleep on top my bag at night. But that could happen down south in the summer.

You don't HAVE to, but I do use a Tyvak ground cloth to keep the bottom of the bug bivy clean (if you don't, dirt/mud gets into the netting when you roll it up and stuff it into its bag), to have something dry to put other stuff on, like my clothes and to sit/kneel on when getting in and out of the bivy.
I use a ray-way tarp and net tent. The net tent has a sil nylon floor, and a no-seeum walls. I like this set up because there is enough room to store all my gear in there with me. There is also some room to move around. I do not use a ground sheet, that's what the floor is for.
