How practical is this on the AT when we are spending the majority of the time in the long green tunnel?

I used a small AA charger for the whole trail and it kept everything juiced.
There are individual tips for a wide range of electronics. One pair of lithiums gave me three full ipod charges and two full phone charges.
I had looked around for a long time before I made a charger purchase.
I'm happy that I went this route...I picked mine up at Radio Shack.
Many folks who went the solar route ended up sending them home and getting battery chargers.

I carried a solar charger (Solio) with me until it was stolen by some bastard in SNP. To be honest, it wasn't worth carrying, I didn't miss it when it was gone. The problem is that solar chargers require direct sunlight to charge, which is something that you will rarely get while hiking. Except in a few select places (the southern AT before the trees green up, Grayson Highlands, Palmerton Zinc Superfund site, the Whites, etc), you will be shaded by trees for pretty much your entire hike.
I found that a simple USB cable was all that I needed on my 2008 thru. It allowed me to charge up my cell phone and mp3 player at most libraries and hostels (some older computers don't provide power over USB unfortunately), in addition to download pictures off my camera (Canon cameras don't support charging over USB, doh). I now have a very small AC to USB adapter that I will carry on any future trips to increase the chance of being able to charge up.

We tried a solar power thing for batteries. Didn't work well at all.
