Expensive micro brew beer.
Oh and 12 year old bourbon. Single barrel.
Oh and bacon!!
Besides bacon and beer, there are usually pancakes for breakfast one day and biscuits the next, chili at lunch on Saturday, and a spaghetti dinner one night.
All that talking about hiking makes people hungry.

But you can't get it without going to Newfoundland.

But you can't get it without going to Newfoundland.
That will be great, hopefully, you'll have sometime to share in form of a presentation.
It's official, earlier this morning I was able to reserve cabins A-D for Fri-Sat and C for Sun.
As in the past, I was told we may not be able to get Kleinrath Hall because of their wilderness training program, only to be told later we have it. A return phone call earlier this morning confirmed that we won't have use of the Hall (bummer). Rather, we'll have use of Relia's Garden. I asked if their pub will be open but, I doubt it.
Later this week, maybe today, I'll be sending emails to those that stayed in the cabins in the past for 1st option. One month from today I'll open any available cabin spots to the general public. This year I won't be able to wait more than a month for payment. In the meantime, if you plan on attending and would like to stay in a cabin rather than basecamp, I can put you on a waiting list, just PM me. Since at the moment I'm living out of my car and in an unfinished house without internet, it may be a couple days before I reply.
If any of you would like to put on a presentation, or have a suggestion for one, PM me.
I'll work on the food list etc as soon as my ALDHA Companion duties have wound down...

Last year I thought about you guys at NOC(Nads Overly Cold), cuz it got down to near zero for a couple nights. I was camped above the gorge at about 5,000 feet and had one of my coldest nights ever and wondered about you guys. Did any of you set up tents and camp outside?

I slept in a 20 degree bag sort of outside. In my van. Probably would have been warmer in a tent.
My only complaint was that everything was so spread out, about a hundred yards or so from some of the cabins and the presentations back to the community hall. Way too much walking involved.

Of course, he's wrong. Many of the folks that attend are thru-hikers, 2000-milers, and section hikers with 100's or 1000's of miles. I wouldn't be surprised if LW has less miles backpacking, in the past 5 years, than most that attend. :p
Fat. Wannabe pack sniffers. Glad you said it and not me. ICorrect me if I'm worng, but have you been to SoRuck? If not, isn't your opinion of those who go based on second hand information? As far as packsniffers go, I'm not one, but some of us do hold full time jobs. Excuse us for making a living.

The NOC will be closed from Saturday Decenber 19th until January 4th. If you'd like to make a reservation in basecamp ($19.10 per night) or the Nantahala Inn, do so, today, tomorrow or wait until after the New Year.

I was in the parking lot across the street at the main office, arrived about 2am. Had to wait for a worker to show up to point me in the right direction up the hill. I didn't know where I was, first time there. Sunshine got me a spot in a bunkhouse the next night....it was nice and warm. This was 04 or 05. 2nd time there was 07 with J5MAN and had to call Stumpknocker to be rescued off the mtn hiking in from Fontana. We couldn't do it in 2 days..we're a couple of wimps. :)

I've signed up on the spreadsheet for 2 items but if the weather doesn't warm up, I'll have to cancel. I've awoken to frozen pipes 3 of the last 4 mornings!
Cold there in KY, huh? my grandkids are thankful for the 4 day weekend thanks to snow.. hope you make it to SORuck.
Marta, I added a few things to the spreadsheet. I haven't been before and I'm not sure how it works (keeping food from freezing), but I'll be there.

You can't view it?

Then click on a tab for the meal (Saturday Pasta Night), then click "edit this page", then click in a empty box, then type your stuff.

Sly, I've entered 6 lbs of spaghetti, 3 26 ounce cans of red sauce, and 14 slices of garlic toast w/cheese for Saturday night dinner, but it won't save.

Definitely. Except for a few people that are taking wilderness courses through NOC we're the only ones there. I think this is the 6 year at NOC so they know petty much what's going on and group the hikers accordingly.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Women Hikers will be gathering again in Cabin E, 4:15 on Saturday. This started as a get-together for women on the Women Hikers Yahoo group but it is open to -all women- at the Ruck. I feel inspired and encouraged by these women. Bonus is wine, cheese and chocolate :) So if you are a woman come on out, if you have a wife, girlfriend, daughter, sister, send them along to join us.

Yeah man, there'll be people to cook and prepare. Just bring some food along, go hiking, kick back and enjoy yourself.
It would really help if you could fill in something on the spreadsheet...
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pLQjeEZIQO4T4_JGqKt4QKw
Directions here...
click "edit this page". It's broken down to Weekend supplies- utensils, Weekend supplies- food, Friday night potluck, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, and Sunday lunch. Click on one of the tabs along the top, or bottom, of the spreadsheet, click, or double click, in one of the blank boxes, type your name and what you're bringing.
if you have any problems, just PM what you're bringing and I'll add it.
I'll buy ingredients for the sausage gravy and make biscuits, but I promise you don't want me to make the gravy!
I should have the biscuit situation under control. I'm bringing dough to make 150 biscuits. (This is Angel Biscuit dough that gets made ahead of time, but is rolled and cut and baked on the day.) 150 biscuits were about the right number last year.
I'll also bring milk, salt, and pepper for the gravy, if you'll bring the sausage and lard. If you can't find lard, let me know and I'll bring some. Lard...last time I looked for it around Charlotte, the upscale grocery emporiums were no longer carrying it. I might have to cross the RR tracks and hunt around.
One thing on the spreadsheet that contributions look a little light for is cups. We will need both hot and cold cups. (Some of us might want to bring our own, reusable cups, not to mention plates and cutlery, to cut down on the general level of waste.)

Little Bear, make sure that somebody knows that they are supposed to take care of the food. Otherwise they'll be finding it in the refrigerator on Sunday afternoon. Last time I was at the SoRuck I plugged in my crock pot, went away for a few hours, and found that somebody had unplugged it. It never did get eaten. Most people go hiking on Saturday morning so you may be back in time to fix it yourself.

Fat, flour, and milk. Salt and pepper. If the sausage is fatty enough, no extra lard is needed. If, like so many pork products these days, it's on the lean side, extra lard is called for.

There is nothing quite like the positive energy felt when a bunch of AT folks get together. Although my time there (3:30 Saturday afternoon to 9:30 Sunday morning) was short, it was worth every mile to and from. There are dozens of you whom I had hoped to meet for the first time who either weren't there at all or were off doing something else when I would have had an opportunity, but that's the price of arriving late and leaving early. Let's put it this way: If I didn't meet you for the first time or get to see you again (Waterfall, Sheltowee, and Wee Hiker Babe, for instance), then I am not happy about it. I hope our paths will cross while I'm hiking the trail this year. Thank you, Sly, for your tireless (?) efforts. It was good.--Kinnickinic
