I'm going on a short overnight backpacking trip this weekend. The ONLY Mountain House meal I picked up (mostly because one of my trail buddies has the BIGGEST sweet tooth EVER!) was a dessert: Ice Cream Sandwich.

I looked and looked and was AMAZED that NO WHERE on the package are preparation directions. No where!!

I'm assuming I just need to add cool water and wait, but does anyone know how much water, how long do I wait? Are these any good?

You just eat it dry, or at least, that's what we've always done.

A little dry but it will satisfy a sweet tooth.

I wonder if you could cook up a little fruit in hot water, making a bit of a syrup and then toss in some broken up pieces?

I agree Captn's assessment.

Shoot why not just crumble them up in your morning oatmeal? YUM!

If you have ever had a real ice cream craving and it turned out all you had was freezer burned so you decided to throw it out, but first thought, "hmmm, freeze dried ice cream" and then tasted a bit of it ... that's how those are. Strange consistency but still satisfies the sweet tooth. :D

The weather this weekend is gonna be great here in Texas so here is another one heading out to the woods. :sun

In fact, I may clean out the freezer before I go, just in case there is an old ice cream container I missed the last time I was craving... :-?

you have to add warm water to get them to fully reconstitute, seal the package up tight so you don't lose heat. then, once its fully reconstituted, you have to slowly cool it, then freeze it. (It is ice-cream after all).

Funny! I would have never imagined you eat them straight out of the bag. I can't wait to see my hiking partner's face when I tell her to munch on that!

or you could phrase it more like "Hey, honey, want something sweet to munch on?"

:D

Eat booggers

The freeze dried ice cream is much better even without directions.

I love the round ice scream sandwiches you can find at times. Yeah they are weird but still good ;)

Yeah- I'm pretty sure you eat it dry. I don't think it's possible to dehydrate ice cream and have it turn back into cold ice cream. (But that would be AMAZING)

Since Kanga isn't around at the moment, I'll do what I'm sure she'd do.

It was at the start of a major heat wave this past summer, around 100* that day.

I told a guy that you could roll it up in a sleeping bag once, and I guess he thought just any sleeping bag, and he was all ready to roll up several pints of ben and jerry's in a thin synthetic sleeping bag...
