I'm hitting the trail on the 24th(5-6 days). Any water problems from Walnut Mtn Road to Erwin(bad year in 2008 for H2O). I have heard to expect snow at higher elevation maybe. What's the weather been like? Any word on what's to come? I'm looking forward to a good hike. Thanks for any input. See you on the trail. Passion Hiker
There shouldn't be a problem with water.
I drove up the road about 30 mins ago. Unaka Mt and Beauty Spot is pure white. It should be down in the 20's tonight up there. And a chance of a little snow. But, It will be warming up this week. The leaves are all turning color. It should make for a great hike with good weather. Have fun!
Like Dmax said, water should be no problem. We've had lots of rain the last week or two, so springs and creeks should be flowing well. High temp in Johnson City this Thursday is forecast to be low 70's, lows in the hi 40's. Will be colder up in the mtns, of course. Also, there were reports of a very active bear in this section earlier in the year - maybe around Jerry's Cabin shelter.

Thanks for the update. I was almost afraid to ask about the weather. You plan for the worst, hope for the best, and deal with what you get. But it's good to know what you are walking in too. Thanks for the update about the bear. Had the same deal in 2007 South of Erwin, luckly he(she) stayed a head of me the whole trip. I plan on camping away from shelters. Passion Hiker

Keep in mind that this is the Erwin forecast...The high temps for those days is 61*. The lows are all at 41*. Rain showers are in the forecast for everyday but one....Perfect hiking weather...Not too hot, not too cold...Have fun!!!

I did this section in late March of 2006 going south and going up and down from the Roan shelter was like a river/toboggan run. Rain then sleet then snow on the last day of the trip. It was like we were getting payback for five earlier days of good weather. Passion Hiker

Just don't park at Walnut Mtn Road for more than a day hike. Call Johnnys or Mtn Harbor.
There has been heavy frost in the highlands.
As for water, there is a small stream just below the road. Avoid the waters south of Jones Falls to Apple House Shelter. You are walking near houses and farms. Lots of polluated run off.

I'm planning on shuttle from Johnny's. I will watch the water sources. It has been a few years since I have done this section. I really like the trail south of Erwin, but I'm ready for a change this year. Thanks for the heads up. Passion Hiker

Lots of relocations going south to Erwin so new views are a plenty.
