So I'm stuck at work right now and we have a country station on, and there's a song by this North Carlolina guy talking about the things he likes the most.

One of them is "mustard on my fries."

So, quick question.

Up here, it's pretty much ketchup. When I lived in Europe, in some places it was mayonnaise  . In Maryland, at the right diner, they'll give you gravy, which is actually pretty good.

But this "mustard on my fries" thing is new to me.

So tell us, where do you live, and what goes on the fries?

I usually stick with ketchup, sometimes melted cheese and gravy is great (not at the same time). Sometimes I'll stop by McDonalds and get their spicy mustard for the chicken nuggets and dip fries in it. It's pretty good.

Canada disagrees about the same time part. :D

Been known to mince garlic and add a little lemon juice to mayonnaise for sweet potato fries. Sprinkle coarse salt, fresh ground pepper and a little basil on the fries, too.

Nice work, Mags!! I think that's that "poutine" thing I've heard about, with gravy and cheese curds. Sounds and looks kinda cat vomitty, but I'm told it's fairly tasty. Anyway, nice photo, that's what this thread is all about.

It's called poutine. A specialty of Quebec actually. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine) It is fried cheese curds..but close enough. A gut bomb and absolutely wonderful.

Reminds me of the movie "Slingblade", where Billy Bob Thornton's character liked "them french fried potaters, with mustard, hmm hmm."

My wife's from Minnesota and her family puts mustard on them. Mustard contains vinegar and most chip shops around the world serve vinegar, so it must be related.

I stick with ketchup. In places like Friendly's it's the closest thing to vegetables on the menu.

Of course, when I have a med rare SILO burger (1/2 lb beef with pork and bacon, topped with pepperjack and hot sauce), the drippings go over the sweet potato fries quite nicely.

I hiked today..but not enough to warrant the above. :( I am having the healthy, but not inspiring, crap.... sigh.

Manchester, NH has a French Canadian restaurant that serves it.

Jack Tarlin

Well, Scruffy, I took your advice and DID Google it.

I discovered that livermush is sorta related to Scrapple, a Pennsylvania alleged delicacy.

I also discovered that Shelby has, not a livermush festival, but instead, a livermush "Exposition".

Regrettably, I will not be attending the next one.

Dunno if I have plans that weekend, but if I don't, I'll be sure to make some!! :D

Being a cook most of my life I have tried fries with a variety of sauces but my most favorites are ketchup and then country gravy with sausage checks along with melted cheese on top. Another good topping is taco seasoned ground beef with fried jalapeno's, sour creme, guacamole, and melted cheddar cheese.......

I worked in a British (well, British in America) pub, so my fry dipping/covering views may be slightly askew. But I mainly go for ketchup, sometimes the vinegar idea, and sometimes mustard.

A lot of people in this area like Ranch dressing on their fries- I hate that, it's a weird combination of fat and creamy that doesn't sit right in my stomache.

For me, fries usually call for some catsup, or maybe just salt if they're really good.

My 6 year old son likes his plain or dipped in applesauce or sometimes yogurt. No, not plain yogurt, usually vanilla but sometimes strawberry. That's also how he likes chicken nuggets. Go figure.

Depends on where you go around here ...

Dairy Queen its gravy.
Sonic would be chili cheese.
At a burger place it'd be mustard or ketchup.

I actually enjoy hot mustard from McDonalds. Or honey mustard at Chick-fil-a.

BBQ sauce is good as well.

Pretty much anything. But I'd still say ketchup is most popular.

Try mustard with a potato chip. It's not bad.

Fun post.
Ketchup or BBQ sauce is the norm here in the midwest. I never tried mustard or vinegar but why not? Did the mayo thing overseas and they were just fine. We have a concoction here in the Ozarks with fries, melted cheese, jalapeno peppers, bacon bits, topped with sour cream. with a spicy ranch dressing dip. Al heart attack on a plate. It is called the mountain man platter.

If they are fresh french fries (meaning the non-frozen kind) then just plain old salt is perfect.

For the rest - ketchup is a standard as is sweet & sour sauce.

I'm not a big mustard fan at all, although I do know people that put mustard on their fries.

I love mustard and go through it like crazy at home, maybe a large bottle every two weeks and maybe go through a large bottle of ketchup every year. But when it comes to fries its ketchup for my go to option. Every once in a while I will mix the ketchup and mustard or just use mustard without a problem if there is no ketchup. If I can get it though I will use white gravy over them both. If not one of these three Ill just eat them plain with plenty of seasoning (cajun is best)

Where can you get green chili?

Good luck with that. Can't even get Rosarita here. Sad. Only tamales I have seen are canned.

I have a question. How do you decide whether to use ketchup or catsup?

Depends on how fresh the cats are. I find spring is the best time for catsup.
