View Full Version : Coke from Mexico
I didn't believe it until I tried it, but theirs is better than ours.
I read an article in the NY Times about the significant difference in taste between Coca Cola bottled in Mexico and Coke bottled here. In Mexico, they still use cane sugar -- the way Coke was originally made -- but high fructose corn sugar is used in the Coke bottled in America.
I bought a bottle (yep, Mexican Coke still comes in glass bottles) and, I'll be damned, it does taste better. It has a brighter, cleaner taste, the way that I remember Coke tasting when I was a kid.
If you want to try, I got it at Kroger in the Hispanic foods aisle, but you can also get it at Hispanic groceries. Be sure the label says "Bottled in Mexico." The ingredients list also shows 'cane sugar' and not corn syrup.
The downside is the cost -- a bottle of Mexican coke at my Kroger was $1.19. But I rarely drink cola, so I didn't mind to splurge.
I've heard this too. Since that NY Times article, it's gotten some exposure. I heard story on NPR discussing the issue. Opinions are split. Alot of folks say it's just a psychological reaction, that blind tests can't tell the difference.
I don't know. It seems reasonable to me, and probably better for you than plastic bottles and that corn syrup. Coke is extremely basic. I find it hard to believe that it's not leaching some chemicals out of the plastic.

Same thing happens with Dr. Pepper. If you ever get a chance to get one bottled in Dublin, Texas, they still use Imperial Pure Cane Sugar there. Amazing difference.

I wasn't sure bigmac! Decided I'd check it out.
And good to know- I usually drink Boylan's coke (also made with cane sugar) which I love, but maybe I'll give this a try.

I was expecting a reference to another original ingredient if ya know what I mean.
Pepsi marketed some retro label this year and re-issued a retro pepsi that uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup.
I'm not much of a cola drinker but the sugar kind was tastier

Yep, it's called Pepsi Throwback. Uses natural sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Tastes a hell of a lot better!

Excluding Corona, it's the greatest beer in the world!

I don't recall.:)
I have an aunt that swears by "Sugar in the Raw." Maybe she isn't a loon.

You can get it at both Costco and Sams Club in 24 packs. And yes, it tastes like it did back in the day!
I tried it for the first time several years ago and noticed a little difference.
A friend of mine from Brooklyn told me it is also popular in Hasidic neighborhoods around Passover time. Apparently corn is not considered kosher when you have to eat unleavened food.
Mags, that is the other place one finds it - in Kosher stores at Passover. Before it started getting imported big time that was the only place you could usually find it.

In a neighboring town, there's some small Hispanic, family-run, convenience/grocery stores. That's where I first had it before they started importing it on a major scale.
Interesting the two places you could get it initially: small "mom and pop" Hispanic grocery stores...and small "mom and pop" Orthodox grocery stores. Talk about different cultures. :)
Coca-Cola tries stopping the importing of Mexican coke (http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20041109/news_1b9mexcoke.html)(hmm? :-? Interesting name) from going into the US because the sales are affecting the sale of HFCS Coke! Hard to do though for various legal reasons that are as clear as mud to me. :)
I've tried both. Both taste like a caustic crap drink loaded with copious amounts of sugar.

Ooh, that is funny/sad. Oh, I don't know...get all crazy here...they could listen to the consumers? Yeah, like that would happen....sigh!

After reading the link, I thought exactly the same -- "don't give them what they like! Give 'em what'll make us the most bucks!"
And what is so funny is they could charge $2 a bottle and consumers would buy it for it being sugar not HFCS :(

I've had the coke in a glass bottle from Mexico ... tasted like coke with dirt in it. Maybe it was just a bad bottle or something.
Also Dublin Dr. Pepper is amazing. But more expensive.

You drink PBR (Ironically, of course. ;)) and read Pitchfork too, don't you?

Something is wrong with you.

Nope. Nice potato vodka on the rocks, and I drink with my pinky raised.

Pepsi has a version called "throwback" that is made with cane sugar that you can buy here in the US. I like it better than the corn syrup version.
