Ok, just to save the mods a bit of time, i posted this in the humor forum (because I think its funny). But, has anyone personally or seen anyone do the walk after they take their pack off for the first time? This may be a "youre so green that you dont know a squirrrell from a chipmunk" thing, but whenever I took my pack off for the first time after my first hike with a backpack, I just started walking with my knees like all up in my face and 4-foot long strides. I had to walk for a minute for it to go away. Has anyone done this, and does it last or, after you start backpacking does it fade off?

happens to me everytime i take my pack off whether its at the end of the day or even at lunch depending on how I break my day up. Don't feel bad it's like that trick we all did as kids with the door frame: stand in the doorway with your hands down at your side then swing them out and push on teh door frame with the backs of your hands--when you do that for a while then step out from the door you have trouble keeping your arms down. It's just muscle memory and everybody has it to some extent but it is still funny to watch.

This can be easily avoided by lying down immediately upon stopping.

I absolutely did that. But nobody saw me because I hadn't gotten anywhere near where I had intended. Camping in some random clearing I ostrich walked all around setting up my tent.

Oh yea! Back in the day when I carried 200 tons* of stuff on my back: there were times when I felt as if I was literally floating off the ground, to the point I sometimes grabbed onto a nearby tree to stay grounded. Now, Only after a REALLY long day do I sometimes get a ghost of that feeling. I almost miss it,,,, almost!

*well, 70 Lbs anyway.

the reason for this is the extra weight and the change in your center of gravity which has been moved back and up. when you take your pack off you need to sit down, put some weight in your hand and bend your right elbow (left if your left handed) back and forth, over and over and the problem will go away.

the best weight is a bottle of bourbon:D

You shouldn't be eating the wild mushrooms. . .

yeesh, eat them? what a waste. leaving them in the ground and holding them against your skin removes every ounce of toxin without:
A: the afteraffects for the weak-stomached (like me)
B: Damaging the mushroom so that whilst leaving no trace, the following hiker is free to eat it.

Yep, much more pronounced back when 45 - 60# was the norm. Not nearly as pervasive now with <30#. Still there tho'.

I've been known to do the "monkey walk" after a couple of hot, sweaty days in a row, but that's not what we're talking about, right? :D

well if you don't know that it's called monkey walk, that's one thing but if you've never had it you haven't been on the trail very long. I'm sure almost everyone get's the "monkey walk"--root cause: monkey butt--cure: anti-monkey butt powder. But when you get the moneky butt you kind of walk real funny too--like a real bad impersonation of John Wayne after riding bare back, nonstop around the world on a clydesdale...sorry for the image but howelse would you describe that walk?

Now the funky walk is just a muscle memory thing when you take your pack off you feel like you're going to either fly or do a back flip without your feet leaving the ground.

I have never done the funky walk but the Fred Sanford walk is all together thing.
You might have seen it sore feet sore back, typically shows up when you first sit down after a long day and you try and get up. It starts off with bowed legs, hands out to the side and gingerly stepping as you try and stratighten up.
I can see it now.

monkey butt is fine if you like it but it's just not my cup of tea...view it as a lifestyle choice like being vegan or something like that....
