At a local gear shop, I saw what looked like an experation date on a Sweetwater filter. Now I know the filter has a quoted life of 200 gallons. But I've never seen anything regarding "shelf life" of the Sweetwater.

The Sweetwater filter element I have has filtered less than 50 gallons in its life time. However, I know the thing is at least 5 years old.

So my question: Do you need to replace the filter element after a certain amount of time if you have not reached the 200 gallon level?

probably not. it's probably activated charcoal and whatnot and im sure over time, moisture from the air would break it down but im sure the shelf-life is just a way of the company to cover its arse
