With all this talk of wild animals attacking hikers and crime taking place, people shot, stabbed, robbed, etc.....I've finally decided, that being a lone hiker is very dangerous. I guess I could just quit or hook up with a buddy but, I've decided It's time to stop carrying a bunch of stuff I don't really need and simply replace it with some good old fire-power.

My camera is nice for taking snapshots and preserving memories but, I'd be better off saving the weight and just start carring more ammo. The nice Marmot Twilight makes for good shelter but, at 5.8 lbs, I could simply go with a ultra-lite bivy and carry a larger rifle.........that would also allow me to drop the 15 degree bag so I can upgrade the rifle with state of the art scopes and, of course, carry more ammo. If it so much as moves, the new sense of thinking must be, to shoot first and then go find out what it was. If I'm in my tent and you roll up on me, the times are starting to dictate, I must exit the tent with either my taser or pepper spray on full blast........totally incapacitating the culprit. If it was only to say hello or to borrow some water.........well, I'm sorry but, I don't want to end up a headline in the local paper.

Horror stories abound and life is much too precious to allow wild animals or thugs to stop me from enjoying the great outdoors. All the luxuries are nice but, they just weigh you down in times of need. I'll just have to make sure all the bobby traps are picked up after a night of camping. Ahhhhhh, the great outdoors.......ya just gotta roll with the times.

What is this world coming to?...................is this the way we, as the backpacking family, have to start acting, to keep ourselves safe?

carry. don't carry. I couldn't care less. But I feel it's just useless weight to be carried by paranoid people who are safer on the trail than any major city in the U.S. or by the testosterone boys needing to compensate for other shortcomings. As i said, I don't care if anyone packs heat or not, but announcing it seems a little stupid to me. IMO. Is this supposed to be a humor thread?

Too much media will make you more paranoid. You should leave the weapons at home - leave all news media at home and go for a long easy hike. And don't worry, nothings gonna get ya.

Come on, I'm bustin balls................a bunch of friends and I got into a big talk about the girl that got killed by coyotes, that led to the usual bunch of horror stories about murders, rapes, robberies, etc that befalls hikers...................everyone seems to have one.

That always leads to the SOS about carring weapons and protecting oneself while on the trail.

So, I decided to take it to the limit, just to show how crazy it really is. Truth be told, you're in more of harms way walking in any major city or riding down any American highway.

Me, I take what the good lord gives me................I'd hurt nobody or anything.....just want to walk the walk.

Petr,

You're from Detriot..................of course you should be concerned.

I just figured, if we fill the crack-head community and the homeless thugs full of headlines about hikers/campers who give no quarter........we can take back a once peaceful hobby.

Napster, that thing looks sweet..........................I'll carry two of those. Now, I can go with a lighter back and just have captured crack-heads/thugs carry my stuff.

Wow, hiking is getting fun again.

Sure it's lighter but it probably kicks like a mule and with that short barrel you might hit the side of a barn...if you're inside.

Impressive weapon though. I would not want to be looking down the wrong end of that barrel--even if they couldn't hit me. the shock wave would hurt enough.

A budy of mine send a link to a video that fits this thread perfectly...i'll have to post the link later..I'm at work now and can't get my home email.

A preview of it thoughgoes like this: The gun is colapsable and when folded up makes a wonderful flashlight then unfolds to a small machine gun. Now that is cool and it fits with all the ULA theory.

Your first mistake: succumbing to your fears.
Don't be afraid.
Just hike.

None, actually. It's just that one of the many useless pieces of information rattling around my transom is the fact that that's where the word TASER comes from.

Oh, and the fact that Tom Swift didn't actually have a middle name.

This Rhode Islander will have a cigar in mouth and that tune blazing through the portable Bose unit, as I thin out the crackhead/thug population along America's hiking byways...................I will feel I'm providing a service for my hiking family.

No need for thanks.......just seeing you enjoy the great outdoors is thanks enough.

The best defense thing to carry is pepper spray, and do not hesitate to use it.
Most people will hesitate to use a gun because of its permanent effect, (namely death).
But if you pepper spray someone who turns out to be innocent, you simply apologize and the effect wears off. If they do not accept your apology, then they are a jerk who probably deserved it anyway.

How about if I accept your apology and then kick you in the balls as hard as I can and then apologize?

There was a solo hiker, (who I know), who arrived at a seemingly empty shelter, dropped his gear and walked around the corner to take a leak, only to be abruptly pepper sprayed. The girl doing the spraying said she was freaked out because she had seen this guy following her all day. The guy did not see anyone else that day, probably because he was not looking out for anyone else and just groovin' to the hike, (everyone hikes their own hike, man). The girl apologized and he understood. Later another couple showed up, (and did not get pepper sprayed!). We sat around the fire, had a few laughs, smoked a joint and everbody got laid.
So, pepper spray - yea, I highly recommend it.

Hey, I wasn't trying to be funny so, ease up my tight-assed brother. I was simply taking all the talk of self protection to the extreme. Personally, I don't carry weapons unless, you want to call my ever-present knife one. I've been a solo hiker/camper for many a year. For every bad experience I've had, there are countless thousands of good experiences. My major concern would be running into a bunch of teenagers who watch these movies and play their video games and have become desensitized to violence or, like those idiots in New Hampshire, want to see what it's like to kill people. Even a site like this announces that we'll be walking the trail with money and supplies. Hey, if you get yourself killed, the good thing is, you never, ever, have to worry about it happening again.

I've dealt with more than my share of deerhunters, at night, full of beer, on their ATV's...........enjoying the great outdoors. This isn't the hobby our fathers had.

I wasn't the least bit on your case or "up tight".

Sure there are "bad apples". Sure there is a chance so nut job will hurt me or someone else.

You can't spend your whole life worrying about what might happen. If you do that one day you will wake up, look back, and realize you wasted your whole life hiding in fear.

Let it go. Relax.

BTW, I wasnt the only one who thought it was meant in jest. The moderator moved it into the humor section.

Paper plates can be hit with regularity at 100 yds with a 2" bbl .38. By myself and quite a few others. Barrel length does not affect accuracy as much as you might think. Granted, a good 8" S&W will drive tacks and outshoot the 2" .38 with the right operator but we were talking sides of a barn here, right?
Bob Munson (I think) shot 10" ballons at 200 yds with a 2" .38 on a TV show, pretty impressive.
