To all forum members,

I am writing to thank all of you for your replies to my questions and for all the informative and helpful posts.

We, my wife and I, just returned from three months of travel in Europe. During this time we camped in farmers fields, manicured campgrounds, mountain valleys and forests. We also stayed with friends, and in hotels, etc, but did spend a good bit of our time on foot with packs and many nights under the stars.

Our equipment choices were informed by information posted here by various members. We did make a number of changes to our gear while on the road, discarding some items and buying others, but eventually, using ultralight guidelines, arrived at a light simple outfit that worked for us. Given the nature of our trip, and our physical condition at the start of the trip, (poor) equipment had a great deal to do with our enjoyment of the journey. Poorly fitted or too heavy gear was just a misery. Happiness returned as soon as equipment was improved. All in all we had a great time.

We will soon be departing for another extended journey in another part of the world. Although we are now going to the tropics and conditions will be very, very different then a European summer there is one thing that will not change: we will never again walk or travel with anything other than an ultralight outfit.

Cheers,

I think it is great that y'all have the health and resources to do such adventures. Sounds like good planning. I'm taking notes.....

Chin Music,

I hear you about the health. As a guy who made out his will and said goodbye to his wife and kids a few years ago, and then beat the odds, I count everyday I'm still breathing as a gift and carpe diem.

As to resources, it's just a matter of priorities.

Cheers,
