99.9% of the time you'll be able to find a spot to hang on the AT

Because he's smart.
I've never had a problem in GA or NC. In the summer, due to the height of the underbrush, it can be a problem to find TWO adjacent hammock sites. One is never a problem.

There are plenty of places where there are no trees for a hammock. Or too many trees for a hammock. The good news is that you can keep hiking for a little while and find plenty of places to hang. So it's not really an issue, unless you just have to hang on top of a bald.

lol didnt no this was a hammock forum i should be more observant
... i think you'll find way more places to hang than level places for a tent. my guess is almost no one has ever used a hammock for a bivy. well, very very few, anyway!

The only reason to ever do so is bugs, otherwise, just set up the tarp.

You can count me (and my family) in that number. Low Gap shelter in Georgia, June 2003, thousands of honey bees everywhere. Got stung several times cooking dinner. Due to a nosy bear, we stayed in the shelter, and used our Hennessy hammocks as bivies, for the mesh. Worked pretty well, actually.

In many cases, by the way, it's illegal to camp above treeline in the Whites in any case. Plus, environmentally, it's often a poor idea.
