View Full Version : Two day January shakedown hike in PA area, anyone care to join?

ShelterLeopard

So, I thought the shakedown this weekend was great- really cool people and very good hike. But, it was a shakedown for winter gear, in something like 60 degree weather... I was hoping for snow, not rain. And, I didn't have all the gear I need yet anyway. So, I'm planning on another shakedown- two days, January 16 and 17 (though if it's better, the 23 and 24 will work too), Saturday and Sunday.

Overnight, not a difficult hike. I'm thinking about seven miles to a shelter and seven back (or beyond to a road)- doesn't need to be near a shelter, but I really like to be near one so I can pack up in a dry area in the morning. I know, I'm turning into a softie. Honestly, I don't care if it's near a shelter or not.

This is directed mainly at Mara (Timebreaks), Hobbot, Matthewski, Panzer, and Big Ease, 'cause they were awesome on the hike this time (and Ernman, though we didn't see much of you), and Nox2825, Faarside, A-Train and Mali, because I know they're interested. But anyone who wants to come is welcome.

It is meant to be useful as a shakedown for 2010 thru hikers, but again, anyone is welcome.

I'm in if I can get away that weekend! We could always do Wind Gap to Water Gap, and stay at Kirkridge again. Or we could actually do a section in Jersey! :p Water Gap to Blairstown is a nice section, but there's no shelter on it. We could go REALLY soft and get a cabin at Mohican! :D

Hobbot
11-17-2009, 10:46
I'm in. Either of those weekends should work for me.

Jersey, PA, NY...any of it will be fun.

ShelterLeopard
11-17-2009, 11:07
Sweet! Maybe start in Wind Gap- that's a nice area... A cabin sounds a tiny bit tempting, but it'd totally defeat the purpose of a shakedown!

timebreaks
11-17-2009, 11:10
hehe...I know. :p Is water going to be an issue at Kirkridge in January? I don't suppose that there's really anywhere where water *won't* be an issue in January.

I suppose the really important questions are:

1) Is there a diner in Wind Gap for breakfast? (or do we just meet and eat in DWG again and shuttle to Wind Gap?)

2) Will you make scones for real this time?

ShelterLeopard
11-17-2009, 11:15
More important answers:
I will make scones. I'll do it the night before instead of the morning of. (And this time maybe I'll know who will or won't be there... Though, you can never go wrong with making too many scones)
There is a place to eat, I'll check out if it's a diner and when they open.

Oh, and there'll be no water. Who needs water after scones? But we can cache it. Or be hardcore and melt snow...

shlep, you rule the known at. your new blood and its your inheritance.
hobbit, create robot dayhikers to replace the real ones but act better.
earny...teach your children well.
panzer,...state the obvious. someone has to.
mara, sing sweetly . then hike like its 1999.
big ease, observe and conserve. then bring me ship from tiland.
one job left, pancakes. i got your backs.

Matthewski, you're awesome. You're one of the most giving, smartest people I know (on or off trail)- you're down for the January hike, right? (I know you said you were, just making sure)

This sounds like a good idea. I've not been in the loop for a decade or so. But what area is being considered?

ShelterLeopard
11-18-2009, 20:33
I'm thinking Wind Gap, either SoBo or NoBo, and just for two days, we'll see.

have you firmed up a date as yet?I am thinking that I want to try and make the Pa Ruck at the ned of the month but am interested in trying to make your shake out hike as it is closer to my home as well. I just drove through Wind Gap today on the way back home from family down near Philly. Just trying to plan my time out as best as I can.

I hope so I will need to see as we get closer what I have going on. That gives me some time between that and the Ruck which I hope to hit as well.

I put it in the calendar so I should be all set I am actually looking to see if I can take an extra couple of days and knock out the last part of Nj that I have. I'll have to try and figure out transport stuff If I try and do that as well. I need to go south from 206 in Jersey to the state line wrap it up.

So, as of now we have (more or less definitely):
Mara/Timebreaks (or TwoBeers??)
Hobbot
Sasquatch
Matthiewski, I think (he hasn't posted on here, but last time seemed like he'd do it)

And maybe:

So, anyone have anywhere they really want to go? (Do NOT say NoBo out of Lehigh Gap/ Palmerton)

Mara suggested NoBo out of Wind Gap or even NoBo out of DWG into New Jersey. I wouldn't even mind doing the same thing as last time (DWG- Kirkridge and back), just because all I need to do is test gear, and I can do that anywhere. Besides, the bakery is in DWG. :D

So any suggestions?

Awe. Your no fun. Hiking out of lehigh gap was fun, granted it was a hot august day.....

I'm down for anywhere in that area

What about
Eckville Shelter at (40.63375 -75.95789) Right on hawk MT road and going 7.4 Miles NOBO to Allentown Shelter (40.68305 -75.87385 )?

Does any one know if there is parking on Hawk MT road?

It has parking at 40°37'31.65"N 75°57'12.48"W And is 1 mile south of the Eckville Shelter I'm not convinced there isn't one right at Eckville shelter...

Can I get in on this hike?

I live closer to Port Clinton/Hawk Mt./Allentown area so that'd be convenient, but I could drive to DWG area.

Is there a definite date set yet?

And A-Train, I think this may be MLK day- the 15th, isn't it? Do you think you'll still be able to come?

Ah! No! Well, don't be too surprised if I end up doing a third shakedown (this one'll be the second), because inevitably, (and the reason for said shakedown) some piece of gear will either not work or will be inadequate in the snow, and I'll need to replace it, etc...

PS- I will actually be making scones this time, so I really need to know how many people are coming!

I don't care where we go, but if we are going near Eckville Shelter, there are a number of side trails through the Game Lands and Hawk Mountain. So, plenty of options if we want to do a loop hike. And, there are a few places to park, not sure about directly at Eckville Shelter, but there is a parking lot not too far away.

Now it is finally turning to winter, so hopefully we will have snow this time.

Yes, I am pretty sure we were talking about Sat-Sun. I think the hope is to avoid car shuttling, so either a there-and-back trip or a loop trip

SAT- SUN is correct, slugger, if you pick me up in DWG (and I leave my car there), I'll give you a ride back to Wind Gap when we're done. I'd rather be in DWG because it is easier for me to get directly home from there. Sound good?

Shelterleopard,
I'd love to get in on this hike as well. Any route is fine with me (I didn't realize you folks all went out in Novvember - I mustabeen asleep)
Also there is a DER parking lot just east of Eckville Shelter on Pine Swamp Rd. This is the service road that the AT follows up to the Pinnacle - As you are coming down from Pinnacle on the service road, the AT turns sharply left 3/4 mile from the bottom and heads over to Eckville. If you were to continue straight on the service road, you come out at the DER parking lot.

How about this? I am now doing two hikes. One on January 23-24 will all of you, and another the weekend before, on the 16-17, and anyone who can't make the 23-24 or wants to come on two hikes is welcome to join. But the BIG hike with everyone will be the 23-24, okay?

So I'm thinking that the 16-17 will be Wind Gap to DWG, and the 23-24 can be a harder more interesting hike. So let me know if you want to join on the 16-17, but most will be coming on the 23-24.

As of now, on the 23-24 (correct me if you are on here and shouldn't be or aren't and should) we definitely have:
Mara/Timebreaks
Hobbot
Matthiewski
Panzer
Bags
Toolshed
Hangman

And probably have:
Sasquatch
Inkedloner
Slugger
Slugger's Roomate
Pickelodeon, possibly
A-Train

And Matthewski is right. Never count scones! I'll just bring as many as humanely possible. (Chocolate chip, lemon, and a dried fruit and nut one. Any nut allergies?)

I'll pm everyone my cell number, and if you suddenly can't make it, and it is the afternoon before we are supposed to meet or anytime after, please call me- I might not remember to check messages online- just leave a message if I don't pick up my phone, with your trailname. If you say Bob is calling, I have no idea who you are. Last time we waited for a while before we found out we were waiting for someone who was in Florida.

If you're more than half an hour late, we'll probably already have moved on, so just start hiking and we'll probably meet up at a lunch break or whatever (I'm a slow hiker, so you'll probably be passing me :D ).

Oh, and, off topic, but I will be up in VT in the Xmas/New Years time-frame. If I can pull myself away from snowboarding for a couple days, I might go out for an overnight snowshoeing trip probably around Stratton Pond. If any of you happen to be up there and might be interested, let me know.

Well, not really, though I wouldn't be totally opposed to it- I just want to get my legs ready and kick out my gear a bit. And I don't mind doing something I know well, rather I like it- especially because the next six months will carry plenty of variety of the trail for me!

Yea it would be a huge commute. Have you ever heard of the phrase, go west. Who knows we might cross paths sometime.

wolf is fun slep. he has peircing eyes that can stare down oncomming headlights. he hikes with about a 2 lb from skin out weight. and he can out walk us all. we call his nalgene sized pack, uberpack. and he sleeps in a unisuit instead of a bag sometimes. if you pass him in the morning, you may pass him again as he walkls bothways and up and down. no one outhikes wolf 23000. but we all carry stuff.he wears what he needs.

Anyone want to go NoBo out of DWG to Jersey, about 8 miles, then hike back the next day? I've never been there, so I know nothing about the area. Is there a good area for camping?

NOBO form the DWG there is a backpacker campsite about 4-5 miles. Very large, with bear boxes. About 1 more mile North is sunfish pond, however no camping is permited. The hike is beat except for the first mile there is some water action. Not sure how much further past Sunfish Pond there is a nice summit with some great views. I don't have those pages of my companion.

I dunno, 5 miles? I want a pretty eaasy hike, but that is pretty short... Though we could go to Sunfish Pond, then hike back to the campsite- that'd be seven. Then five miles out the next day. Any thoughts? It could be really low key this way. If anyone has a hike they really want to do that is not too far away, my ears are open.

You could also take the Red Trail at the same parking lot at DWG to the peak of Mount Tamany(sp) then pick up the green trail which takes you to sunfish pond. from there take the AT back to the backpacker campsite. In the morning follow the AT to the parking lot. The AT and Red Trail trailhead are at the same location.
Only problem the beginning of the red trail there is a good rock scramble and verticle if icy it could be difficult. Total loop around 8-9 miles

Ops, also no need for car relays.

If you go a bit past sunfish pond and go off trail (maybe there is a trail) west towards the river, There are campsites right on the water. I canoe the Delaware in the summer and there are quite a few sites with fire rings right off the banks. One even has a pit toilet about 100 yards into the woods. Maybe someone has a map with the locations on it?

Well, if you guys are going up the Red Dot, I'm glad I'm not going...that scramble and I are NOT friends! (Although maybe if I hiked it *without* whiplash, it'd be a better time...)

I will miss your bacon, though, Shlep. Let me know if you go out again before you leave for GA, even if it's for a dayhike! I'd love to see you before you leave!

I believe that campsite near the river is Worthington State Park

This is what I have done in the past. Also for a slightly longer trip, after hitting Sunfish pond I have gone around the pond (there are trails on both sides of the pond) before returning to the campsite on the AT. Other than the climb up Mt Tammany, it is a pretty nice hike but not terribly long.

Another option would be to continue North on the AT after hitting Sunfish pond, but I am not sure how far we need to go until it becomes legal to camp.

Yes, I agree on the simplicity of not having to shuttle cars :P

Unfortunately due to work, Friday afternoon is not an option for me, especially with an early sunset.

The weekend after (1/30 - 1/31), *might* work for me.

Take them to a family outing on the AT. As the first activity of course is taking a hike. :)

Basically, any weekend before president's day and after next weekend work for me.

Well, I suppose that leaves the weekend of the 30th, and the weekend of the 6th. Less time than I thought, wow.

Okay, well I hope all of you go on this hike, and I may organize another (hopefully, one I can make it to) before I leave for Georgia.

Hobbot
01-19-2010, 12:28
Well, I am most likely going and I think my friend will tag along. Where and who else are still questions that need to be answered. I have three suggestions for locations: (a) NJ side of DWG, (b) Bear Mt, NY area, or (c) Hawk Mt, PA area. I can put together a trip for any of the three of those, just let me know if you are interested and any preferences. I am planning on an early start on Sat and end sometime Sun afternoon. I'll check the weather...

ShLep:
I still have from DWG to High Point to do, and would be willing to do a hike soon. I just started a 3rd shift pt job Wed. AM, Thu AM, Fri AM and an occasional Sat. AM.
If I can get the Sat. off, and can stay awake for the drive (or get a driver), I would like to do a Sat - Mon. night hike (driving back on Tues).
I'm tied up on the weekend of Feb. 6th. (AMC XC instructional weekend - I instruct the beginners), so the previous weekend plus (30th to the 2nd) are possible.
We'll have to keep an eye on the weather. I'll hike in bad stuff, but I'd rather not drive in it.

Well, Ernie and gm1275a, it looks like there aren't any others for this weekend. So, I am going to suggest that we postpone and hopefully I can go in 2 or 3 weeks (next week is out since my parents are visiting).
