Hello,
Wondering if anyone can make a suggestion. I'm looking for a replacement for the Army issue poncho liner. If possible I'd like something that packs a little smaller, maybe with some of the newer insulation.
The BMW quilts are not in my price range. Also, don't want the tapered design. Down is not workable for me in this application. My gear will get wet, and it will get knocked around. Still, I want to go ultralight, more or less.
We will be traveling in SE Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, etc) for three to four months, hill country to beach, probably not camping much as we understand it here, but spending quite a bit of time in pretty basic conditions - nipa huts and so on. Will be walking, riding in Tuk Tuks and local buses.
The standard poncho liner is actually OK for my use, but I do not want to (will not) return to SE Asia with any gear or clothing in camo or OD, or anything that looks military.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Guy on BPL named Tim Marshall makes custom quilts at a pretty reasonable price. Probably your only option. Or make you own following the Ray Jardine plan.

How small are we talking about here? Not sure how small a poncho liner packs down to. What size quilt are you looking for? I might make you one out of 1.1 ripstop and 2 layers of Insultex.

The lightest BPL quilts are on sale for about $80 now, but I don't think they have the long size.

Hey,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the link and also Tim @ BMW, but I suspect he'll be out of my price range.
Papa John, a regular poncho liner is 85x62 and weighs about 1.3 lbs, which is kind of heavy for the level of insulation it provides. It rolls to about 14" X 5" - i tried it just now. About how much would a quilt you might make run me?
Cheers,

I'll have to see how much Insultex I have left. Not sure if I have enough for a full length quilt.

Tried Fanatic Fringe?

Maybe also out of the desired price range, but another option is to check out Kick Ass Quilts, http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/kickassquilts.htm
Or as Mark Verber's site (http://www.verber.com/mark/outdoors/gear/sleep-system.html) suggests, make your own:

I just made a quilt. No experience w/ a sewing machine. 1st time I ever used one. I made a great quilt using combat xp 3.7 and 1.1 nylon all bought from thruhiker.com I tested it at 45* w the wind blowing wearing a micro fleece and silk terramar's and was fine. Weighs in at 1 lb. I am very happy. 74" long x 54" wide

Mt'n. Laurel Designs only quilt, the Spirit, has Climashield as its insulation. Good choice.
I am not enamored of PrimaLoft as an insulator in a garment that requires storage by compression in a stuff sack, such as a bag or a quilt. My original Caribou Mountaineering summer bag had PrimaLoft fill. It now has just "Prima" fill. No more Loft. :-?

DIY. I made a ray way quilt, and am happy with it.

MLD Spirit Quilts have Climashield Apex, now.
Tim has a website enLIGHTenedequipment.com (http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/) and answered my questions at BPL here (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=26894&startat=20).
Thru-Hiker has Climashield Combat (http://thru-hiker.com/materials/insulation.php), sewn only at the edges (not quilted) to make a poncho liner.
Select a fabric a "Breathable Fabric" or a "Coated Fabric". Use thread and stitch length Tim suggests.

The last quilt I made was a Ray Jardine kit to see what it was like versus the prior two quilts I made on my own without plans. It wasn't much different than how I did my own, but for a person with no sewing experience, it's a pretty decent kit. At around a hundred bucks shipped.
