Hello friends,
The dates for the PA Ruck are January 29 - 31st, 2010 at Ironmasters Mansion Hostel in Pine Grove Furnace State Park PA.
Bunks are $27 per night with a $10 day usage fee. You may contact the hostel to make a reservation. Hostel Caretakers: Ray & Lori Burt at 717 486-7575
www.PARuck.com
The PA Ruck is a hiking-oriented informal get-together. You do not have to be a thru-hiker to attend. We have interests in all trails, and would love to hear about your hike, schedule a presentation!
The hostel has a beautiful grand piano in the main common room, and we welcome musicians - bring your instruments.
This is an organized pot luck. Your contribution is essential if you are attending.
You can contact someone regarding your participation and contribution by emailing: ATrailHiker@hotmail.com
or
post here on Whiteblaze.net
You can also go directly to our INTERACTIVE SPREADSHEET:

I am arriving one day early to bake - if anyone lives locally and wants to drop off larger types of meats for cooking - I'd be glad to take it off your hands :)
You can also attend a day early, just make sure you contact the hostel.
We'll be posting updates periodically.
Thank you,
Marsha & the PA Ruck gang :sun

camping?....
I am waiting word from the new park ranger, Jason Zimmerman, regarding camping.
Last year, camping was closed due to the bathroom repairs.
This year, the campground is undergoing a timber project during winter months - HOWEVER - they may have an exception for a group of us, but I won't know that until Mr. Zimmerman returns to work first week of December.
The PA State Park website states the closure as well, but after phoning the local office, we'll see what happens for our group.
Last year, the hostel allowed us to camp on their property -which worked well because campers were allowed to use the hostel bathroom facilities AND it was cheaper AND we were allowed a campfire....even though there was ice an inch thick and no one could walk around outside without falling - what a nightmare THAT was.
That's all the info I have right now - be patient - plan on attending - and hope for the best.
If the campground is going to be closed every winter, we'll have to seek other Ruck facilities.
That's where you all come in - for suggestions ;)
Thanks!

There is no rhyme or reason, it just happens :sun

I think a lot of Pa.'s state parks actually closed their campgrounds early this year due to the state's budget situation. I know Poe Paddy, on the Mid State Trail, is normally open through deer season for hunters, but this year was supposed to close in late October.
I'm just guessing here, but I suspect that the problem PGF's ranger might point out is that the privies are shut down and winterized.
Just wondering, could maybe the Old Mill where the AT Museum is going be used for "overflow" from the hostel? Lots of empty floor space where folks could throw a sleeping bag.

Dang! This date may conflict with the CT Ruck. Must check.
Marsha,
The link you posted didn't work for me, but I got there via www.docs.google.com (http://www.docs.google.com). When I plugged in your login and password above I got your nice spreadsheet. This allowed me to post a vegetarian side dish for Friday night and sign up to show the National Geographic A.T. film Saturday night.

The PA Ruck would like to announce the Saturday night's presentations:
6:45 to 8:30
Laurie Potteiger from the ATC (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4805859/k.BFA3/Home.htm) will host the National Geographic A.T. documentary, "America's Wild Spaces." Afterwards share memories and ask questions raised by film.
9:00 to 11:00 (?)
Jim "The Geek" Adams will host his own story and slide show of his 1989 Mississippi River canoe trip-AT thru-hike-and a bike ride accompanied by the most famous cat on the AT, "Ziggy". You can also read about "The Geek" in Larry Luxenberg's book Walking the Appalachian Trail (http://books.google.com/books?id=rp6RywISXngC&dq=larry+luxenberg&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=j3mcUUf28H&sig=Gi8b3133miVoz0p-euemggbQz2E&hl=en&ei=JxITS4yQLc2GlAewuPCfBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CCYQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=&f=false). We're very excited to have Jim as he has been in hiding for many years, but recently came out in October to feature this outstanding presentation at the ALDHA Gathering. If you missed it there, you'll want to see it here. Jim's biography will be highlighted in the 2010 PA Ruck brochure.

We are allowed to camp in the rustic non-electric Group Tenting section of the park and one may reserve this area year-round.
The area is divided into six separate sites with capacities varying from 35 to 50 people each, or the entire camp can be reserved.
The sites are in a wooded area surrounding an open playfield.
Non resident is $37 per night, resident $25. You can reserve your site by phoning: 888-PA-Parks.
Lone Wolf

$37 per night? to tent? holy...
If I read that right it's $37 / 35 to 50 which makes it pretty cheap if people actually pay whomever ponies up the $37.
Non resident is $37 per night, resident $25.
Am I correct in assuming that that is not a per person price, that is a per group price?

That's funny.
No one ever drank ice tea there unless they brought a can in. It's definitely a southern thang.
No one ever cooked scrapple either. Anyone that arrives on Thursday or Friday mornings usually drives into Carlisle with us to have breakfast Friday morning at the Carlisle Diner over on W. High/Route 11, where they proudly serve scrapple. I had a bite.....once :o
We also like butter, salt & pepper in our grits.
BTW, I'm cooking some southern dishes this year: black eyed-peas with ham hocks and cornbread, and deep fried apple fritters which I'll glaze after they cool a bit. Not to mention other things, which I won't mention thank you.

We have Skyline Chili restaurants here and we love it! You can even buy it in the frozen food section. I only eat it at the restaurants because they pile it on pasta with finely shredded cheese. The experience is great: crackers, TV, hot sauce.

For those who can't make it, or those un-interested in the prospect of 37-dollar campsites () or sleeping outside, there will be another hiker get-together in Pennsylvania, just a few weeks after this one, in Duncannon PA.

The MAIN campground at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, is closed for the winter, as many parks are in PA.
Group camping is open. That means one big group camp area, 2 picnic tables, one big fire ring, 2 outhouses. This area is for 20 campers.
The price for the group camping is $37.00 per night for the entire campground that hosts 20 campers.
NOT $37 per person as previously thought.
There is additional group camping area for a larger group, that runs $54 for the entire campground per night.
If you are interested in renting this area, please phone 888-727-7275 and rent it immediately.

I'm planning on hiking in on that day, but my wife will be up there noonish on the 29th to drop of some plates, cups utensils ect. and will be more than willing to run for what ever you need we will leave a little space in the budget. We will provide a soup or a chile on the 30th depends on who cooks and what is in the pantry. Maybe if I can talk my daughter in to it we will have a cheese and lunch meat platter for lunch on the 30th. Jester trust me there WILL be cheese:banana all three days if I can do it. We will provide a good main course for the Ruckfeast I'm thinking ham, but don't hold me to that. and maybe something else. Bronco and Baltimoe Andy will be hiking in from the south starting on Wed. morning. hope to see Jim ,Jenny and maybe Vera on the way. PA Ruck here we come !!!

Just went up and looked at the camp site. She's a little soaky. We had a h3ll of a storm last night. The floading going up the hill is as bad as I have ever seen it. The good news is the ice is all gone:D looks like good weather from now till the Ruck so it should dry out. There is plenty of trees for you hammock hangers. The park office is up the hill from the pavilion there is a sign for AT hikers to park there cars to the right of the pavilion. for you car campers you can drive back to the camp site.

After the trouble we had the year before last the ranger is liable to stop by and check for alcohol, so he better not see any cans or bottles laying around... Please use extreme discretion. Pass it on.

Glad you rented it Harryfred.
The ranger that was there 2 years ago works in another state, Panzer.
You can take a shower at the hostel if you'd like, there is a donation-few bucks.

Did you notice if there was any downed or cut wood for a campfire in or around the campground and if not do you know someone in the area that may be able to get us some?

'Amen'.., did you hear that campers. Also anyone using the group campground, we will be dividing the cost of the group site amongst us all and reimbursing at this point i'm assuming 'harryfred'. I'm guessing the costs per camper should be somewhat cheap the way we like it. No stiffers or freeloaders:)

I did not notice how much blow down there was. I would imagine a lot after the storm we had here. I was going to take some of my own fire wood up to the camp site later on today if I get a chance. It will be larger stuff I have several logs that are too big for my fire place and too difficult to split down. The only places I know locally to buy wood in a quantity less than a cord would be the local Giant or Lowes in Shippensburg.

I do not know about any previous trouble. I do know I can be held responsible for any trouble or damage done and this is my area. I have a decent rep with the local rangers I would like to keep. I appreciate the support in keeping it cool. You all know how it only takes one knucklehead to give every one a bad rap.

PA Rucksters love to hear your thru-hike story. Have any good suggestions? Experiences? Here's your forum! We invite anyone to listen in as well. It's fun. Don't be shy!
We'd also like to invite anyone to bring their completely filled packed (ready-to-hike) for a tuckerizing. We have several "tuckers" this year, hope you can attend. This is a great event and you'd be surprised what you don't need to take on a hike.
Two great events happening at the PA Ruck - if you're thru-hiking this year, you may just want to stop by and check that out. These 2 events begin around 1:00 p.m.
Prior to these 2 events, the PA Ruck holds a soup benefit. Attendees bring their own soups, chilies, luncheon trays, and then we all stand in line to serve ourselves. Your donation will go to the Appalachian Trail Museum. Any donation is accepted, so come on down for lunch too!
Thanks!

Yes it was ‘mighty cold’ that night, -5 if I recollect. I was awaken by a very cold 'Redhead' asking me if I would drive her up to the Hostel. On our drive up we saw the largest black bear that I've ever seen in PA.., and it was walking on two legs.., headed towards the Hostel.., so I slowed down just so I could get a better look at it.., and all of a sudden it ran over and wanted to jump in my car.., and I hollered, "hooooold on there black bear", they ain't room in here for me, the Redhead, and you, but iffin’ ya want, you can hop on the back.., so it did.., and that was the night I ended up taking a Redhead and a Black bear to the Hostel.., and dat’s da the truth, so help me Jack;)

Local junk yard approached me and said they want to buy it. Mixed feelings - wanted to keep it but can't afford to keep two cars. Will be filming the outside and the interior before calling them to pick it up. Would like to drive it one more time but no time. Have to get busy so I can get to Pine Grove Furnace.

Had a great time and awesome hike to those who traveled by foot. Had a blast and it was much much needed to be with other hikers the winters are way to long some days. Loved hearing all the tales that I have heard bits and pieces of from others being told by those involved. To the few and hardy souls of the campfire was a blast company always makes any camp warmer. And yes Matty your tent was ridiculously warm with just those 3 flames. This was also one of the few times I drove back from a Hike not hungry. Had a great time in the Kitchen with everyone. Big thanks to JB for helping me get back to the Doyle was great chatting with you.
Had a great drive back and mostly followed the AT home through PA and NJ fun to watch the ridge line going by. I was able to return a bunch of calls and jump back into the chaos that is so often life. Was chatting with my mom on the way home and she was asking about the hike and the Ruck and then about 5 min into the conversation add's in "Oh by the way I'm in the hospital...." Tomorrow may undo a bunch of the decompression of the ruck! How long till the Warmer?
I'll try and throw pic's up when I can find the time.

Had one of the best times I have had in a long time this past week.:banana Hiking down from Boiling Springs with Panzer. The night at Alex Kennedy shelter with Panzer, Digger, Sasquatch, and Nox. Getting that damn fire going. Spending the night at James Fry shelter (Tagg Run) in the teens:eek:. I now know a lot of what I can do, can't do, and will do better next time . Nothing teaches you more about hiking than hiking. The ruck its self was a blast I met a lot of really cool people and learned a lot. Loved sitting around talking about different gear and methods. I met the great Mattewski:sun. Standing around the campfire sharing stories with Bag of Tricks, Gary and Jester till 0400. Hope to see you all on the trail. Thanks to everyone.

4 of us did a weekend trip from BS to PGFSP, then drove up to the Doyle afterwards. The guy who was new to backpacking kept trying to warm up his posterior to the point of melting rubber and nylon. After making a mark on his pants from the clearly labeled "HOT" heater in the corner of the Doyle dining room, we decided his trail name was "FireAss."
Saw your entries in the logs at Alex Kennedy and James Fry. Did one of you have a saw? There was a fair bit of firewood left at JF - we only burned 1/2 of it ;)

CamoJack is my slave. He likes it.
I love it when there's music at a Ruck. Especially piano. Weathercarrot played on Thursday and Moonbow John played on Friday. I'm uploading their videos onto FB under PA Ruck.
The lunch benefit for the Appalachian Trail Museum brought in $213.00. Thank you!
All I can think about is Jester's mom bringing a table full of bakery that she baked herself--for several days and then drove 2 hours to deliver it. She donated it to the A.T. Museum bakery benefit. The bakery brought in $80. Then one person handed me a $50 bill to give to the A.T. Museum on top of bakery that she already bought. Total amount for the A.T. Museum: $343
Kindness abound.
Then Trail Angel Mary shows up and volunteers, she just did everything - more importantly she knew how to do everything. If it wasn't for her, we would have eaten an hour later, which proves that I really don't know what I'm doing and you guys need to thank Mary :D
I know we had 3 potential A.T. thru-hikers, 1 potential CDT thru-hiker (30-30), and one cross-country potential bike rider (JB).
The presentations were real nice. Ted from the Konnarock & MidAtlantic Trail Crews did an outstanding job for awareness, The Geek's presentation was definitely the bomb because here you do not have a DVD with soundtrack, you have a human voice standing there sharing his experience verbally during a slideshow. Laurie Potteiger's presentation was a BEAUTIFUL National Geographic film of the A.T. very nice!-- Skeeter, Weathercarrot, Pootz & M&M were Friday presenters with the diverse.
Sunday always creates anxiety for most because we are either in a hurry to get out of there or we don't want to go. I would love to have a nearby large enough cabin to accommodate friends afterwards.
Thanks to all of you that attended, every person contributes something :sun

Based on the description posted, they aren't No Patience's poles, reported missing earlier in this thread either so when you contact Ray, tell him they were different than the ones I (Mara Factor) reported to him by email through the regional HI office.

See NO PATIENCE's poles in my picture gallery, pa ruck 2010. The day hike photo with the group just standing around (not the posed group photo) with the "steeple pole" sign in the background (nailed up on a tree). She's in the foreground, bottom left, with dark jacket and hood, with blue daypack (w/hydration tube) and the now missing poles. Hopefully the one's hostel-keeper Ray has are hers. Anyone else experience their teenager's brain falling out when they get 13 yrs old?
I'll let you know in 16 days if my son's fall out we are still looking for my daughter's. God help us when she turns 16! Time to start cleaning the guns. I know what teenage boys have on their mind I was one of them, hence the guns.
I'm glad the Ruck is not this weekend. :)

the rules witch exist at the park and the respect the hostel receives cause folks to have a good time. rules in themselves have no power to cause fun,...but have this effect on these perticular folks at this event. so is tru the simular effect of trail days getting stupid cause the rules dont count. the place in damascus being defiled and the pavillion in port clinton. when rules are clear and present, crap gets respected and fun is possible to be had. and when rules are absent or unminded, crap happens. nevertheless,..i move we move the ruck. all these rules and respect and fun are getting in the way of my needs for brawls and brash!lol.

Also the ranger never showed up at the camp ground. didn't see hide nor hair of him.

That's because you were in the Hostel most of the weekend. I saw the ranger twice. Parked on the road that is hidden by pines directly South of the group campground. Better check them eyes Panzer maybe they were a little frosted over from all the Hostel heat.

Despite several phone discussions, Ray the hostel-keeper never did send No Patience's hiking poles. Very disapointing.

That's a shame. The hostel is closing for good at the end of April. I know that they will be packing everything up and moving out. Not sure if Ray will leave sooner.

the state ripped off every caretaker systematicly and with intent from the get go to do so. they have a crook in office whos in charge of this and we suffered. but be clear. any lack of services or lack of cheer or shortness of stay on the part of the caretakers is the governing bodys fault not theirs. they may have a bitter taste and be angry and they have financial troubles all due to the states inability to keep the bargain they kept makeing with several sets of caretakers. this is a shame and we should un vote whos fault it is out of office.maby they dont mail us back stuff or help us find lost stuff cause theyve had enough of hell in pa. thank you to all the caretakers who suffered trying to run our hostel. we will reopen one day in a different political climate.

I just talked to Ray at the Hostel while there for the Appalachian Trail Museum Meeting. When the new owners have the building it will be reopened. Ray tells me that several groups are interested in the hostel, all with funds to be able to reopen it as a hostel. The last night that the hostel will be open for guests is April 30 if I remember right. The first week of May it will officially close. Renovations will then begin which will include new windows, new furnace, new paint (in progress now), cleaning and/or refacing the exterior, complete gutting and remodeling of the kitchen, new bathroom fixtures, etc. Ray and his wife will continue to stay there throughout the entire process. Ray will be overseeing all of it and will be the hostel manager when it reopens. So, Ray has gone through some trying and stressful weeks and a lot of Tums. But the long range picture is good. Although, the hostel will not be able to be used for the 2010 hiker season, his hope is that all the groups that have used the hostel for their events will come back when it reopens in a year.
And on a side note, while I was there I scanned the 2009-2010 register in front of the snack shop and a SOBO signed it yesterday.
Good news about the hostel, and for Ray and his wife. I was there the night we did a podcast for Southeastern Backpackers, and Ray did an interview with the host. Ray's an interesting guy, and he really loves the Iron Master's Mansion. I was really concerned when I heard how abruptly he was told that the place was closing. So, I'm glad that he still is able to stay there. Can't wait to see the renovations. What organization is taking over the hostel? The shortage of funds on both sides of that previous lease agreement was a big part of the problem. If the new org has funds to spend on a really good renovation, then things should look up.

Echoing what Mary posted, I also have heard it will remain open (or reopen) with a new organization. I'll try to see if I can find time this week to check into it for a story for the paper and will post more info when I get it.

Was down there today and also spoke with folks from the state. Will write the story tomorrow after after the Central Pa. Conservancy meets tonight. On their agenda is a possible lease of the mansion which would become their headquarters, with a hostel remaining as part of the building's function. They will vote tonight on whether or not to continue pursuing the project.
But to answer Panzer's question, No, it appears the best case scenario would be reopening in time for through hiker season next spring.

So if we are going to have the ruck in 2011 we will need to find a new place.

Not sure how the state ripped off the caretakers. The Ironmaster's Mansion was leased to American Youth Hostels for $1 a year. AYH did not keep up with the maintenance for years. The state kept extending the lease in short increments while trying to prod AYH to fulfill its obligations, and it did not get done.
Ray told me that was basically because the money that came in pretty much all went to the bills, including electric bills that were up to $2400 a month because of electric baseboard heat and poor to no insulation and weatherization.
