Unless it's your wedding, that's no excuse.

Trashgiving is a post-Thanksgiving holiday that a bunch of us (nearly all former thru-hikers) started around seven years ago when we realized that Thanksgiving was a great holiday, but with two problems: Some of us lived too far from home, couldn't get back, or worse, were perhaps estranged from their families for one reason or another. Consequently these folks always had a lousy Thanksgiving. The other group of folks DID go home for the holiday and had to spend three days dealing with Aunt Enid and Uncle Shmendrick and the 400 people you don't really wanna see who are always asking you when you're going to do something with your life and justify your parents' expenditure on your education, blah, blah. We realized that these people also had a lousy Thanksgiving.

So ultimately we decided that we'd rather get together with friends, and not just families. Usually, this takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving; this year it's one week later, i.e. 11-13 December. Our friends that run the hiker hostel in Glencliff NH have once again very graciously given us the run of the place all weekend and we expect all sorts of folks starting anytime after Friday afternoon.

It's a simple weekend: People that want to hike can do that, as the hostel is just off the A.T. and right at the foot of Mt. Moosilauke. Some years we do some Trail maintenance tho there may be too much snow on the ground this year to get much done. People that wanna cook do that. People that wanna
hang out in the kitchen do that. People that wanna hang out in the living room and play guitar or watch slide shows or whatever do that. We never know who's gonna show up or how many people will be there, as hikers are notorious about not RSVPing , ever.

Anyway, that's Trashgiving, and pretty much anyone who wants to is welcome. This year, instead of 2 or 3 people fronting the whole event (which gets expensive), instead, we're downscaling a bit, and encouragiung folks to bring something along to eat and share, tho there will be plenty of other stuff available all weekend.

Anyway, Slugger, hope this answers your question, and maybe we'll see you there.

Anyone with any questions or is wondering what to bring can get in touch with me or bfitz (The Dude) who is pretty much in charge of things this year.

Hope to see some of you in Glencliff!!

Okay, now that the cat's out of the bag, and that I've realized some folks still remain free of facebook (like the savages in Brave New World), here's a reasonable facsimile of the facebook invite...

Attention, Comrades!

Okay, so in the spirit of Trashgiving, we have obtained permission to host a get together again this year at the hiker's Welcome hostel in Glencliff, NH. If you are reading this, then you are invited. Also, although we're doing it Facebook invitation style rather than open announcement on whiteblaze this year that doesn't mean you shouldn't invite/bring/notify anyone you think should come, just trying to avoid such things as unaccompanied 15 year olds or, [folks who wander in not knowing what to expect and aren't into it...]. There will be swearing and the occassional adult beverage. And perhaps floor show.

The dates are: Dec. 11th - 13th 2009 (we figured push it back so folks could plan....and of course jester's mom needs time to bake...hopefully that was good idea...we'll find out!) At Hiker's Welcome Hostel Glencliff, NH....

Anyhow the general concept will be a bit different this year too. No extravagant feast will be prepared in advance...this is to be a recession-style BYOnecessities/favorite dishes/ingredients(kitchen on hand)/pot luck affair. The company of friends is the main concern so the tradition must not end and if we end up with 16 casseroles and 12 pumpkin pies and everyone comes I'll buy a bucket of whipped cream and we'll be fantastic. I also thought about doing a hiker feast out of all the leftover stuff in the hostel hiker box...it's a sin to waste it, and you know jack can do something with it...but aaaaanyway once we're all together whatever gaps in the menu exist can be fixed along with chipping in for the beer runs Friday and Saturday afternoons or some such thing. This will also avoid Lone Wolf being snippy on the Trashgiving whiteblaze thread about the money thing while folks try to organize the party in advance. Also, BooBoo will be hogtied, probably tranquilized, and put to bed at 7 pm. Shut up BooBoo that's generous and you know it.

So to sum up, you should come and bring your musical instrument and some pie or something. It'll be awesome. White russians daily at five. And generally. Your presence is mandatory. And don't forget to use the invite people tab on the top right panel of this page to invite folks from your friends list!

YIB,
-d

Speaking of, I left a nice propane heater at the hostel which Im 99.9999....% sure is still there, so if anyone brings their partially filled propane tank from their barbecue grill or what-not that extra fuel and tank might come in handy!

I have partial pieces of the fryer, I think, still in storage. The rest can be found someplace up in the hostel. Sorry I will not be able to marry the pieces together since my presence will be void due to employment and house sitting services.

For all those Billvillians out there, I am deeply missing the opportunity to cook for and satisfy your appetites this year. Unfortunately the event I was planning for Trashgiving this year was trumped by a surprising hand. I am sure all attending will have a great time and my thoughts are with ya'll. My heart is certainly empty.

Imagining 20 of you sharing a big tub of whipped cream, I hope the shower is working :jump
To those attending and those not - Have a safe and happy holiday season.

So I, the original poster, will not be able to attend! :( A wedding in NY on Sat. afternoon and a mandate to show up on stage at church on Sunday morning ........................
I hope that bringing attention to the event benefits someone!

See you next event (hopefully!).

Happy holidays, all!

:dance:dance:dance:danceWow talk of blister satisfying appetites and marrying pieces together and a whipped cream party and invisible hands in the shower (that line was golden) .... I feel like I just listened to a dirty song by the mentors or like I just read a 19th century paper on economics ....considering its billville we're talking about I'm gonna go with dirty. While lack of communication might have cost us a few attendees (Hey, it's billville, we all make a little "booboo" every now and then:banana...well most of us... that's why we're so forgiving...:p) we're definitely tryin to get the word out now!!....So to all who still did not know.. Just two more days....I know with the short notice and the weather and recession and depression it's hard to find a way to make it, but I still know that a few will heed the call this year, we lucky few, we band of others from our mothers planet smothered in whipped cream.....approximately 20 of us, in the shower.... how do you humans say it at your "huddle house"...covered and.....chunked...? :welcome

There's a possibility that I'll be there, weather permitting. The "Camobile" is in the shop, (no!) thanks to some nitwit making a U-turn right in front of it, but that idiot's insurance company is paying $4,000 to fix it. Anyway, I know I won't be riding the Harley in case of snow, (etc.) and the little rental car might not be up to that either.

What should I bring though, if I can make it?

I don't think it was the coldest trashgiving ever but it was close....fortunately the food was hot and the butane heater didn't give us CO2 poisoning...
