Any one know what the life expectancy of a fiberglass (cloth) wick in say a Fancee Feest type stove would be?

I have been using mine for quite some time with no sign of any degradation.

Do you think one would last an entire thru hike (4-6 months)?

Thanks. I've been experimenting with the Fancee Feest type stove. Sweet and simple.
It's a bear working with fiberglass cloth with the unraveling and all but when you finally get a good fold and wrap it's divine!

Spray it first with hair spray. I think it was WiseOldOwl that came up with that idea, good one!!!

Won't that release BPA into my food?

Nah, just kidding. That's a great idea. Thanks for re-sharing it.

With doing a CDT thru-hike, that's a question I wanted an answer to too. Thanks for asking it.

My thoughts too!

Me too!

BPA is not my concern, but having Heet or Denatured alcohol contaminating my cook system or spilling on exposed skin is! Don't really want fiberglass in my food either. I know I want a lot, but I think I'm in the right place around folks that know a whole lot more about DIY stoves than me. I may also be trying to push it by wanting to integrate my entire cook system, including storing my superstove, windscreen, fuel, spork, mini lighter, and XS MSR camp cloth, all inside a Snow Peak Mini Solo pot for at the most about 8 days between resupplying. I think I can do it! Might have to use a specialty sized plastic flask or Little Nipper Platy or some other spill proof fuel container that nestles next to, in, or on top of the superstove to do it though.

One time someone spilled their dinner onto a StarLyte stove(original design that is covered with fiberglass cloth instead of stainless steel mesh) and said it would not function well after that. I advised to wash it off under warm running water, let it air dry and see what happens. They followed the directions and was able to use it without any problems.

That was me ... Actually, it was my SON that spilled his dinner on MY stove  But yeah, I washed it out like you advised and I'm still using it to this day. Hell, that was over a year ago too!

Really, thanks for all the constructive feedback! Zelph, you and some of the other "stovies" are getting me looking at catfood cans, fiberglass cloth, and potential fuel bottles in a way I never thought of.

That happened to me, too. Looking at fiberglass cloth. Looking at wick. Gently squeezing cans at the convenience store.

I purchased Snow's brand Clams can for a YouTube Hobo Stove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBCAvQn6vHM&feature=related) and a plastic pop bottle for the lid and a vitamin water for the lid. I purchased a 2" reach 1/4" hobby punch. I purchased "yellow label" Heet.

I got a .ps file to make a Caldera clone, I saw first here in this forum. Email author. Ask questions. I had to download Ghostscript and Ghostgum to have it run in Vista Basic. I found titanium foil (http://www.titaniumgoat.com/windscreens.html).

Now I have purchased two zelph Super Stoves, S-L-X Denatured alcohol and MSR white gas.

All I can think about is making a video. I downloaded Microsoft Movie Maker. I am waiting "for the light" in rainy Oregon.

The "stovies" are a strange lot.
