If you think your a beer snob, you won't be on the Trail. Sure there will be times to drink what you like but if it's cold and free, you'll drain it,
or, maybe that's just me.

That is a good one for sure Brother Hooch. But my favorite beer on the trail is whatever beer some other hiker is willing to pack in and share. I for one only pack in the hard stuff. Lots less weight to carry to get a nice buzz right before bed.:banana:banana

If you're in parts of Virginia and want wine, the choice is between blue and green Boone's Farm. I think blue goes best with Moon Pies.

Beat me to it, drat! :D

Other than that, I'd say take cold ones whenever you can over warm ones ;).
I like the Long Trail line (they make a number of beers).
Bass Ale is my old time standard when I'm in the "average" American bar - choice of Bud, Bud Light, or anything darker - I'll take the "other".
The big Heineken cans are nice when you just want to relax after a long hard hot day - as long as you can stop in town somewhere past the middle of the day. Shove it deep inside your pack and it should still be cool by the end of the day.

Shiner Black.

Or for something interesting ... Shiner Smokehouse.
Tastes like you're drinking a Shiner and eating a smoked honey ham at the same time. I'm the only one I know that likes it. Which is why I bring it to social functions when I feel like drinking a beer. (Nobody else wants me to share.)

(Off topic)
That being said ... Knob Creek Bourbon is the real drink of choice.

I was gonna say any I can drink but don't have to carry before consuming. Afterwards, who cares? You don't buy beer, you just rent it and won't have to carry it for long, as a rule.

Pretty much any beer tastes good after a week on the trail, but I lean towards the hoppier brews now.

On my section hike this past October, I ended up getting into Hot Springs a few hours before my ride was to arrive, so I camped out at the Iron Horse Tavern (http://www.theironhorsestation.com/restaurant.html) and consumed four pints of Asheville Brewing Company's Kashmir IPA while I finished up my journal. Nice end to a hiking day, but I was in no shape to take the wheel!

Lots of tasty choices above...the Magic Hat, Long Trail, & Arrogant Bastard are all great! My suggestion for those passing thru PA this year...something from Troegs Brewing Co. in Harrisburg, Pa.

http://www.troegs.com/

Troegs has been winning lots of awards lately and if you like SUPER HOPPY brews, be sure to pick up the seasonal Nugget Nectar which came out last week.

...and the great thing for hikers...Pat always has Troegs on tap at The Doyle in Duncannon!

My first requirement is that it has to be cold, then I start getting picky.

On one hike we left a couple of 6 packs well hidden in a cold creek for the return part of our hike. The next day as were getting close to the beer we stashed, we encountered a group of hikers coming up the trail drinking beer and talking about the beer they found in the creek. They apologized for drinking the beer and gave us the 2 cans they had not opened yet. Got a good laugh out of it. Have to do a better job of hiding the beer next time.

I'll take a Yuengling lager.

I miss Yuenglings...can't get it here in TX but that is what I was going to suggest. They actually have a fairly wide selection other than just their lager...which is their most popular by far.

In short I second the little brewery in Pottsville.

Being I can't get it here I'm a Shiner bock fan. Nice and dark..almost nobody else drinks it in my circle of friends. I've tried the smokehouse and it's ok but I prefer to eat my barbeque if you know what I mean.

An outgrowth of my ongoing study of beer. Picture a wine tasting judge, only with beer, except that we beer folks aren't stupid enough to spit it out like the wine judges! I used to hate beer, tasted nasty. Then, someone gave me real beer, and taught me to make my own beer. It was an obsession from then on. I used to say I was a beer snob (which was true!), but hoped I wasn't so full of myself that I was an absolute snot about it. Lately, I've come to believe otherwise about myself.

I like the various Woodchuck ciders, as I do most ciders. Ciders are wonderful, but they're not beer. I do understand that that's a distinction without a difference. :)

Hope that helps clarify. Probably not, though. Darn, in advance!

The most enjoyable beer I've had on an AT hike is the Yuengling at the Doyle after hiking in 90+ degree heat all day.

Best beer I've ever had hiking is Moose Drool that is made in Montana and you can get around Yellowstone.

I've been disappointed to see it now in Florida. Took all the mystic out of it and my memories of sitting at the bar at the Port Clinton Hotel (back when it was hiker friendly).
It was like when Coors started leaving the west in the 70's, took the fun out of smuggling it.

Previously an avowed beer snob the AT opened my appreciation for anything cold. I like dark beer so here in VT I love Otter Creek Stove Pipe Porter and Alpine Black IPA or for lighter fare Switchback Ale. Black Fly Stout is Great in Maine , 6288 Stout (or whatever MT washingtons elevation is) from Tuckermans in NH, Yuenling Black and Tan in PA. On the trail though cans are king for packing out so Guiness in the can is the gold standard , Yuenling Black and Tan if you can find it, and as long as it is cold PBR is great and cheap. Hmm I am feeling thirsty now.

Sam Adams regular lager or one of their Summer ales. It's readily available, that's good. Their draft is good too. Beyond that, I ask the bartenders. They'll usually let you try a sip of a couple that they have on tap. There are so many local and regional brews now that you don't know which ones are good. It's good to start out with a recommendation. For example, when it's available I like Long Trail. Again, either their lager or a Summer ale. It's probably available in MA, VT and NH. Possibly Maine too, but by then you'd want to know about the Portland ME beers. It's an interesting subject.

Any beer that is free is good beer on the trail. I like yuenglings, long trail, dogfish head. second tier: tuckermans, magic hat, troegs. Third tier: anything brewed in Maine and sold out of state. If you can only find it in Maine, its good. If you can find it elsewhere, its crap (looking at you shipyard and grittys).

I'm not saying Warsteiner is the bee's knees but I agree with their slogan. There is NO excuse for drinking cheap nasty beer. If all that is on hand is Lite this and Ice that, I'll take water.

If you can't stand the way your beer tastes at 45-55*, then it's cheap beer and you ought not be drinking it.

You have good taste in beer, especially the Modus Hoperandi, but you forgot Dales Pale Ale.

Yuengling is the oldest and probably one of the closest to the trail but certainly not the best beer. It's ok for a cheap beer tho. Haven't had one in years but I do like their Porter. price has nothing to do with how good beer taste, different strokes for different folks!
yuengling original lager----- on trail
HAMMS beer---------- at home
hamms might not be what it was back in the day, but it won 1st place last year at a very big competition in chicago last year :-)

Planning a thru-hike for next year. Already penciled in having a friend waiting at the end of my trek with a cooler full of Sam Adams Octoberfest.

The best beer is the one YOU like. I used to be a homebrewer and an avowed beer snob but I outgrew it, and price has nothing to do with it. There are some very good inexpensive beers and some over-rated pricey ones. My favorite is Guinness, but I happily consume PBR every so often. Yuengling has been available in my area for a couple of years and I drink it frequently. HYOH and drink whatever beer you like.
