Temperatures are dropping everywhere, and with them comes rising heating bills. I feel I was justifiably annoyed when overheard my neighbors bragging about their heating bills. I was on my balcony (top floor), and happened to hear two people directly below me discussing their heating bills. They laughed at the fact that my heater was keeping them warm and I was paying for it.

In order to even the score, I pulled out my trusty 5 degree bag, turned off my heater, and opened the windows.

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it is my understanding that most of the temperature insulation is in the outside walls, not just between floors. I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant surprise. Since then, there has been a marked difference in the floor temperature's I feel through the soles of my feet.

The bag works great.

How are you paying their heating? If anything, they pay for you since the heat from their units rise into yours.

They said that because they had me above them heating my apartment, someone below them heating theirs, two apartments on the sides, that they could basically turn off their heater still stay warm.

Their logic is sound, and I realize it's a common practice, but it still annoyed me.

I did that in college. I always tried to get an apartment between others so it would take less heat. It also took less a/c since I didn't have sun beating down on several walls.

The space between two floors would usually only be insulated for sound deadening. With the windows openin the cold you have to worry about water pipes freezing and bursting.

Why don't you turn your heater off every night and sleep in warm blankets/sleeping bag (with windows closed). You'll save quite a bit on heat that way. Most people up here turn the heat down at night.

As a cheap college student we keep our apartment at a cool 55 degrees F. Well worth it... Sad thing is for a our small 3 bedroom first floor only apartment we still pay 350$ a month. All the heat goes to the 2 apt above us.

It was pretty much a revenge thing. And it's Texas so it may have dipped below freezing, but not by much.

Since then (this was a few weeks ago), I have started sleeping with the heater off. It's quite pleasant, and apparently a very green thing to do.
