What hikers make up the top 10 in all time AT miles and about how many miles do these hikers have ? And blue blazes off of the AT count on this thread. No silly ***** either. Like.... " does the Long Trail count ?" etc. BUT if somebody carried anothers ashes on the AT I'm sure Jester would say those miles count...
(This thread is NOT about thru-hikes or just white blazes)
I am simply curious .... We don't have to be exact !!! Dogs don't count either !!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------
I'll start this out with several that I *know.
Warren Doyle with 30,000
Baltimore Jack with what... 27,000 ?
Lone Wolf must has around 24,000
Ward Leonard
Wingfoot has over 10,000
Trek must be over 10,000 by now
Sherlock
Seiko must have around 27,000

I know I was bored when I came up with my 10 biggest mile days but trying to figure out how many miles other people have hiked is a level of boredom I hope not to achieve.

" trying to figure out how many miles other people have hiked is a level of boredom I hope not to achieve. "
And in the end, who really cares? Well, except for Warren, Jack, and Wingnut. It is just something they like to brag about.
And I wouldnt put too much stock in how many times a person has hiked the AT. I respect someone who has completed the triple crown A WHOLE LOT more than someone who has hiked the AT 3 times.
Actually, the hiker that I most admire and respect is Nimblewill Nomad. He has hiked many of the various long distance trails in the US. He has seen more of this country by foot than most of us will see by car in our entire lifetime.

Nimblewill Nomad rocks. Met him during my (and his) hike of the AT in 1998. Super great guy, and a pleasure to hike around, for as long as I could keep up with him. The guy flies.
I bet George Ziegenfuss is tops. Besides his thru-hike, he hiked the AT nearly everyday for years. Typically, a 6-8 stretch around his house in Bland. If you add those miles up, he had to be around 50-60k when he died last year.
Lone Wolf probably has a couple thousand just walking to Dot's And if he takes Laurel instead of cutting through the alley it could be doubled. :p

Gee, I think I'll stay outta this one.
And as for the guy above who mentioned I like to brag about my total accumulated miles.....well, actually I don't really know what they are, have no true idea, don't keep track of them, never really did, don't post 'em in registers or elsewhere.....but if he wants to think I like to brag about 'em, well there's nothing I can do about it.
Hopefully, the rest of this thread will progress without cracks and shots about individual hikers.
But I sorta doubt it.

hahaha So let me get this right.... This thread doesn't interest you, you have an ax to grind with one or all of the hikers and WB members that you bashed... Way to contribute to a thread.
I find it very funny people turn into thread trolls by running around in threads they claim to have no interest in and bash others in a pathetic effort to settle some score they feel have with another hiker.
Could you provide just piece of evidence where B. Jack is bragging about his miles ? You won't answer that question because you can't. If you address that question at all I'll be suprised....
Contribute to the thread or shut up. It you don't like this thread then why did you even comment ? .... Other than to sharpen your trolling skills. If you are so bitter or have a chip on you should deal with it in private. If you are SOOOO jealous of those that have hiked so many miles on the AT then go hike more yourself.

Funny, I was under the impression that Ox97 was man enough to answer for himself. But a good cheap, without facts, shot you have never passed up wolf... Ha e you STILL not gotten over your long public standing jealousy of Jack ? Or is it more of a crush ?
Bragging about trail miles and stating you have a certain amount of thru-hikes are two different things. If stating how many thru-hikes or miles you have is bragging then you are just as guilty. So, are you guilty of this Wolf ? You have said many times, but I forget.... How many miles along the AT do you have ?
Interesting thread topic..but let's try to tone down the ah, heat a bit. :sun
In the mean time...further proof that I suck:

Funny thing is, nobody seems to declare anything in threads like these. At this point, I wonder why anyone would. This isn't an AT concern or issue even though it might be considered history. Having said that, if nobody makes any post about the total number of miles hiked on the AT then the thread is none of the above. Overall it seems like trolling to me, but let's see how many answers are posted. I will guess zero.

Hmm.. How many times have I heard Jack brag about miles.. ALMOST every time I am around him when he is talking to hikers. He always starts off... Hello, Im Baltimore Jack. Ive hiked the trail umteen million times. I can tell you everything you ever want to know about the trail. He liked the attention he got from the newbie hikers in GA, NC, and TN each season. That is who Jack is. And Im not the only one that would make that comment. And Ive told Jack that face to face.
And I dont have an axe to grind with Jack. Jack and I poke fun at each other all the time. In fact, I offered to pay all his expenses if he wanted to go on a hiking trip with me out west a few years back. His comment at the time was that he didnt want to go out hiking on trails that werent as social as the AT. We have our differences in opinion about a lot of things, but I would say it is far from grinding axes.

Lets see.. am I jealous of Jack (or anyone else that has many thru hikes)? Nope. Acutally, far from it. If hiking the AT over and over is your thing, go for it. It isnt my thing. There are tens of thousands of miles of trails in the US to explore. My preference is to see something different.

Lone Wolf, stop stiring the pot. If you say jack is bragging for posting his number of thru-hikes and then you turn around and post your miles..... Then either A. being true blue Wolf and stiring the pot or B. You are being a hypocrite. Either way im jealous of all those miles you have. Are those JUST your AT miles or did you count your blue blazing miles, because i thought you'd have more than 16,000 total miles along the AT. Who do you think has the most AT miles ?

I have hiked more miles with Jack than anybody else so I find your perspective curious. I have never heard Jack involved in a conversation like you described. Usually once hikers know what Jacks name is or once they realize that he has tons of AT experience they naturally ask about his miles or thru-hikes. In other words .... I am not saying that you are lying, just wrong in your perception of Jack.
Now do you have something to add to this thread in regards to miles or are you just here to "poke fun" ?

OK, we've got Sleepy the Arab with 68,000 miles and Lone Wolf with 16,000 bonafied miles minus 24 slackpacked miles. Also there is the claim of "I bet George Ziegenfuss is tops". I wonder what else we can establish?

Well, thanks to Nean, I have gotten a little closer to some peoples actual miles. I was a little off on a few of those hikers. I'm glad that you find it fun to read. My starting this thread was a sincere curiousity. People that claim to not care can't even stop coming to this thread, which shouldn't surprise me. I wonder if those people listen to music they hate and watch shows they hate ?
I was very careful in my opening post to clearly state that this is not about White Blazes... Atleast the purist/blue blazer crap hasn't started. Perhaps I should have put this in the straight forward section.
No need to put it in straight forward......and there is nothing wrong with your thread. I just doubted that you would get any info from the "horse's mouth". You did, however, get 16,000 miles minus 24 slackpacking miles from LW. :sun

No one's mentioned Stumpknocker but he's got a bunch of miles. And it's not like him to proactively brag about them. Even if he chose to, he's out there hiking instead of posting on WB.
No matter how many and who comprise the list, I suspect there are hikers who aren't on WB, don't publish trail journals, keep to themselves, and rack up the AT miles in a very quiet fashion.
Re. Jack's alleged bragging, I haven't been around him too often but I've never seen him brag about his miles. Even when he's dispensing advice to newbie and oldbie hikers, I haven't heard him say "I've done X thruhikes and covered XX,XXX miles." And for all his thousands of WP posts, the only (rare) times when he reports his stats is when someone directly asks him or goads him.

I've hiked over 68,000 miles on the AT.
I was going to mention you as rarely do I hike and not see you in the shelter logs. Also don't forget Stumpknocker, not only does he have tons of miles but they are mostly with beautiful women.
Mt. Dew, George hiked 6-8 miles on the AT just about everyday. He lived near the trail in Bland. He was the hiker who was shot on the trail on Jan. 1. near his home about 8 years ago. If I recall correctly, he was in his late sixties at the time. The bullet passed thru one side of his torso and came out the other side. The doctors told him the only reason he lived was the fact he was in such good shape.
You might remember him. He and his wife, Murray Ann had a flyer posted on the IGA in Bland and took in hikers.
Oh, to be independently wealthy to where one could just hike for years on end...
A common misconception and one that makes me chuckle- it has nothing to do with wealth- NOTHING. It's ALL about priorities. :)
It helps if you don't measure success as money and material possesions....:-?

This is correct, for example I often meet a very old guy who has two girl friends, one in Vermont and one in North Carolina. He has been walking the AT seasonally between them for decades. Very quiet only talks to me because I often give him beer. I prefer completion number over miles, because I doubt many people are able to calculate the mile number with any degree of accuracy. At this time I have completed the AT 3.7 times (possibly 3.783). This does not count repeat miles like Mass. and southern Vermont which I have done countless times. I know exactly which miles I need to reach 4 times, and may do them eventually. I realize this is quite less than all of those we are talking about, however it may give you another way to argue.

This is correct only if you take money completely out of the equation. Constant hiking is in fact one of the very cheapest way to be alive.
Working is massively expensive, often you do it to the death.
Money needs to be in the equation. What happenes to a person, who after spending 5 years of hiking suddenly falls and brakes a bone really bad? Lets say he or she needs traction and a long hospital stay. That person has no job, no money, and no insurance. What then?......... And what about money for retirement?..........How much does a thru hike cost?.......I wish I was wealthy!!!
I'm the top AT hiker... I've got 1,000,000+ AT miles. And I did it all with a 150lb pack. Yep, it's the truth. I dare you to prove me wrong. Innocent until proven guilty, and all that. :sun

What if you don't brake a bone or live to retirement? In almost all cases fear is the reason people do not live, not lack of money.

Illegal hunter. I stayed with him and Murray Ann in '03 about 6mos. after the shooting. He was still weak. It was a disheartening to see as he was an energetic person beforehand. His retelling of the moments after being shot and his mental/spiritual struggle with whether to give into death or fight was one of the most profound stories I have been lucky enough to hear.

The Traveler has many miles, don't know have an approximation though.
Yeah- you can waste a lot of your life asking what if? Makes ya wonder how people made it all these thousands of years.
I did most of my hiking before I realized I'm covered by the VA, so I've been able to replace no worries w/ nothing to worry about anyways. Regardless you can always get medical help w/ no ins. or $ If losing what you got is more of a priority than living while you can- that decision is personal.
As for people who hike and don't say..... who cares? If they hike all these miles and are never known of- except a few select individuals:rolleyes:- there's a pretty good chance they are exaggerating anyways...:-?

I dispute virtually everything Ox said above.
As for axes to grind, I kind of have one to grind with people who insist on saying things about me that are patently false.
Oh, I also dispute the comment about turning down Ox's trip offer because I was only interested in "social" trails. In truth, I probably turned it town because I wasn't particularly interested in hiking with Ox.
