Is the 'most miles for a single day' only for thru-hikers or do day hikes count?

According to Bryson that distinction belongs to Chicken John who apparently walked thirty-seven miles in the wrong direction for 3 days.

I just did a hike by headlamp. I fell on my ass at least half a dozen times because the trail was covered in ice and there was nearly 3000' gain in 3.5 miles.

Lightest pack...

Met a guy just before Waynesboro who was averaging 25 miles a day...he had a "pack" that was really just some 550 cord tied into a shoulder harness with a web across the back that he tied his stuff to. He wasn't carrying much...had a fleece sleeping bag liner and not much else. He was hiking stoveless and ate mostly protein bars...he said he was doing enough miles that he was able to mostly eat in town and supplement with bars while on the trail.
