I'm trying to track down something that I thought would be relatively easy to find, but no luck so far.

All I want is a simple, polyester (no cotton!) fleece hoodie with a partial zipper for regulating my tempurature while hiking.

Here's something close, but no zipper:

Any help is greately appreciated.

Regards,
Greg

Check a dollar store. I've gotten fleece dirt cheap there, all styles. All polyester fleece works the same, though it may come in different weights from different mills.
In RI we have the Ocean State Job Lot (often called the "Slob Lot" - a trip there will tell you why :D).
Salvation Army thrift stores are good too. Last two trips netted me a pair each of like new New Balance 991 and Keen casual leather shoes, as well as three nice Merino wool sweaters. I have more than enough fleece for now.
In the summer you'll probably appreciate a full zip (year-round, actually, as it helps you get the garment on and off with a (probably) 1/2 ounce weight penalty.

Also Patagonia has exactly what you're looking for for $150. They have the red one on sale in certain sizes in a separate listing.

I have some Patagnia stuff and it is all very good quality and was bought on sale but the problem is even 50% of their full prices is still expensive in most cases. Look around and you can find it on sale. For instance, Zappos has it in XL only for $102.50 with shipping included.

Usually when I have my eye on something from Patagonia and wait for it to be on real clearance (<50%) after the season is over, my size is gone but you may have better luck.

Also if you have a TJ Maxx near you try there. This year they have had a pretty good selection of outerwear and socks by many of the well-known manufacturers of hiking gear that I have not seen in the past. Maybe some outfitter went out of business or cleaned out a warehouse.

I like the same style, 1/4 zip with hood.
Not very common in good quality 100wt or 200wt fleece.

I like a 100wt fleece hoody for over my wool sweater in extreme conditions. I have one, but it isn't good quality fleece. I have a nice 200wt, with warming pouch, but no hood. I have a heavy lambswool type Helly Hansen fleece, but a bit heavy, and full zip. Nice extra length though, to below the bum. Easiest thing might be to add a hood to the quality 200wt 1/4 zip with pouch. It is actually 1/4 snap, not zip. Snaps are nice.

$12.00 will get you a fleece (no name) at a dollar store. You will probably wish to take in some of the seams, though, as they tend to fit like burlap sacks, and loose clothing is extra weight on the trail (despite how cool it looks to be dragging your baggy butt pants in the snow when you're in the city ;)).

I found a bunch at the local TJ Maxx...Marshalls...whatever discount clothing store in your area. You're getting close to out of season for that stuff so go now. They were heavy...which was surprising. I ended up buying a similar Mtn Hardwear shirt instead.

I paid $85 for my R1 Hoody a couple of years ago, it is da bomb. I like the older fleece hoody Patagonia used to make but it's ancient history now.

I've been looking at the R1 Hoody and similar tops, but I'm not sure if I'll like how the hood fits. It seems like the hood would feel constricting since you don't have strings to control the opening size. Also, does the flap move around much when you have the zipper partially open?

I was trying to avoid paying the big $$$. Plus I can't find anyplace local to try on an R1.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I'll keep looking and it is good to know I'm not alone in my quest for a budget partial zip hoodie.
