Hello,

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and say hello. My name is Megan Figura and I am creating a brand new website that is fun and helpful to backpackers of all ages, style and experience. It's located at www.practicaltrailcooking.com. (http://www.practicaltrailcooking.com./)

Why "Practical Trail Cooking"? Quite simply I wanted to do something to give back to the trail community for what it has given me so far in my life. You see currently I am 16 and have gained my experience thus far on the Long Trail and Appalachian Trails of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine where I am originally from. I am currently planning a 2011 thru-hike attempt with my dad.

Practical in that I intend to show readers our readers how to create what we publish using basic kitchen tools and easily obtainable ingredients. Relevant, as a great deal of what I publish will be helpful to thru-hikers when re-supplying in town along the way.

The website will be full of material that will be "open source" - In other words, I have designed this (with a little help from a way cool dad) so that all the material can be emailed, printed or saved to PDF's. Once I feel the recipe content is substantial enough, we will publish those as a free open sourced e-book with the option of ordering a hardbound printed copy if you want one. (Save a tree, help save the environment! )

The website is designed to be easy to navigate, fun to read, and will NOT bombard you with tacky Google Ads.

So to learn more about me, and our site, feel free to visit it. An introduction video will be posted there later today in place of my picture ;)

Suggestion: Don't market your website until you have content.

I for one am not going to bookmark a website that has "coming soon." Wait until people have reason to want to go to your website before having them go there realize there is nothing worthwhile and probably ignore your marketing for it when it actually has content worth viewing.

Give the kid a break. She is mostly introducing herself and her background versus "marketing" her website. She didn't ask you to bookmark it either. Geesh.

x2 lay off the girl.

I am personally very curious to see what you put together. I'm always up for new supplemental meals into my normal menu.

Welcome to the community.

Sorry, but I agree.

I am however excited to see what sort of content you come up with! :welcome

How did you get the name Blue Tang?

Last year on my second LT thru attempt I told my dad I wanted a new trail name. He suggested maybe I wait and get it the old fashioned way by having someone adorn me with one. I didn't really want to do that so we were goofing off one night and he told me that I was ditzy like "Dory". Dory is a fish in the animated kids move Finding Nemo. Dory the fish is a species called "Blue Tang". And that's how my trail name was born! :D

Hi Sailor. Thank You! This weekend we are going on a short overnight trip into Bear Trap Canyon. We have a tradition now of packing here 2-3 times in the early spring because even though it may get cold, there usually isn't any snow to deal with in the canyon.

On this trip I'm going to do my best to do a video making a really easy Chicken Carbonara on the trail.

I don't think what I am showing is really going to be all that "new" so to speak. There have been some good food people to show us all the way and give us new ideas and that's what I am hoping to do myself. Just show a different way for alot of different people in a more practical manner that makes them feel at ease.

I will post my recipe and how to make it after I get back from this weekend's trip! :)

Welcome, BlueTang! We'll look forward to it. Good luck with your website and thru hike.

Thank You Many Walks! I met some good people from the Class of 2007 during their hike. Orange Blaze, Kentucky Blue and a few others. My dad and I were doing a section in Vermont when I met them.

Wudhipy - No shelter mice kabobs lol. But I believe that last year at Big Branch shelter if my dad would have had his way, he would have created a very nice dish using filet of raccoon.

Let's just say he isn't fond of being woken up at 1:30 in the morning with a racoon running across his face :D
