Three Hundred Zeros

Dennis's account of his two part thru-hike which was started in 2007 but interupted by 300 zero days due to a medical emergency while in Pearisburg VA. He completed the hike in 2008.
The book is well written and flows well. It seems he had quite the adventure along the way and gives a good taste of what its like to thru-hike. Well worth the read.
This book was of interest to me for a couple of reasons. I had meet quite a few of the hikers he talks about, hiked with or mensions in 2008.
I also supplied him with a tiny, ultra-light ham radio rig designed specifically for long distance backpacking to carry on the second half of his hike and finally meet up with him in person at Andover, ME.

I'll have to put it on my list I met him at the train stop in Pawling NY when he was coming through. The radio was made to fit in something really small I don't recall was it an Altoids tin or something like that right?

Yes, it's built into an Altoids tin. I called it the "ATS" for Appalachian Trail Sprint.

I assume that's your design and build?
Is that your place by the tracks? Red volvo?

I met him in SW Virginia at Atkins in '07. Nice to know he persevered, finished the trail, and wrote a book.

yes, ~
Wow, that's impressive.
I don't think we've ever met, but I've heard talk about you. You've earned the reputation of being able to fix anything electronic, for cheap.
Hey Sasquatch: You're actually mentioned in the book. Remember when you gave LongWe Tru and me a ride from the rail stop to the deli? You couldn't make the return trip, it was a Friday night and you had an event to go to. Thanks for the help.

Wow that was fast. I took what was the second to most basic shipping and already got the book.
I skipped a head to see what was said about me. I am sorry if I made you think that i worked for the ATC. I am only the local maintainer of that section of trail. Hey it makes me sound so much more official than the guy that runs the weed eater and fills the info booth so lets go with that. I have a rainy weekend ahead so I hope to be able to curl up with the book looks good from what I have seen.
I carry my own zero with me. :D
hmmmm ... I did a big SOBO section in 08 starting from Katahdin in July.
I remember staying at a shelter in ME or NH and talking to a hiker who said he used morse code on the radio. We talked briefly about it, I didn't know there were so many people who still use Morse code! Can't remember what he looked like though! Maybe it was K1?? is the timeline right? :-?

Hey Sasquatch, I guess I gave you a promotion. My hat's off to you, all that trail maintenance that gets done is absolutely amazing. At some point I want to head north and spend a week doing just that, I owe it. When you finish the book, mosey on over to blog.threehundredzeroes.com and leave a comment on your thoughts. Reviews at Amazon.com are always appreciated too.
Hey Choco, I knew you guys meant no harm and besides, you were funny too. The funniest thing there though was "Wild Oats" after lights out. I talk about it in the book, I can't believe how much energy that woman has.
Nite all....

I have been reading it slowly and enjoying the hell out of it. I keep laughing and then my kids ask me to read them what I was just laughing at. I thought my daughter was going to wet herself with the headlamp in the hammock in the eyes and that wasn't even 20 pages in. I will definitely post when done.
