I am wanting to attempt to make some gaiter similar to the OR eVent shortie gatiers:

However, I was wondering how they would do using some 1.1 ripstop that I got from walmart instead of the eVent. It is not coated so it won't keep water out (which is ok) but should allow it to breate pretty well, I assume.

So, I would use a small toggle and some 3/32" shock cord for the top, but what about the bottom. Any suggestions on what I could use for this? Also, is that just a grommet in the bottom that the cord is tied to? If so, would a button hole work instead of a grommet? And how about the clip for the shoe. How could I do this?

Yeah, I'm new to sewing stuff......

Thanks

Patterns:

Also, if you have any old things you can take them apart to use as a pattern. Get a seam ripper.

If I didn't get NEOS right before a mid-march backpacking trip on trail, I was going to make a pair of Gaiters, and not worry about the bottom, weight of the fabric should keep it down if you make the leg fit smoothly over your shoe. They kind of have a cute Japanese legwarmer thing :) Also, wider elastic at the top will be more comfy in the long run. Don't forget to post when you finish!

If you are using a boot instead of a shoe, I would think you could make them leg warmer style. Make a tube wide enough for you leg and to go over the top of your boots and either sew in an elastic band at top and bottom, making sure the bottom is fairly tight so that it kinda grips your boot and the laces should keep it down over the top as well as the kinda grove in the back, or just place elasticized drawstring that you can tighten. The reason I don't think that would work with a shoe is that the ankle part of the boot would help keep it from riding up if you use a shoe you would definitely need some kind of anchor.
