View Full Version : Bugs in northern NC/southern TN section in mid to late May
I'm planning a section hike from I-40 to just north of Erwin and wondering what the bugs will be like - Anyone??
Thx

Last year at this time, black flies were bad; especially near Jerry's cabin shelter. I had alot of spotty scabs were they got me and I'm not particularly preferred when other human meat is available.
Insects don't like things moving around hat rims. Hence the dangling balls on sombreros. Maybe I'll sew some on my bucket hat? Ariba!!

I never really had any problems with bugs around that time. Maybe around the Humps, Elk River, and Watauga Lake where it is muddy and wet. But Jerry's Cabin is known for bugs for some reason. Once you are in the higher elevations, it is usually too cool and windy for bugs.
I would be worried about shelter mice more than bugs.
Thanks for the info - I've got a bug head net to wear over my baseball cap - those gnats drive me crazy!!
I really, really, dislike DEET and refuse to put it on my skin - hoping it will still be cool enough on that section in May to wear a light long sleeve shirt and pants ... Did Springer to Dick's Creek Gap at end of March and was just stunned at how hot it was - as soon as it got hot those darned gnats came out ...
