ok, I am ready to buy my first hammock.
I need a tarp, netting, hammock and all all the gear with it.
What is the lightest and best buy?

I will use it for 3 season section hiking for as long as 3 weeks at a time.

I am ready for your comments.

Have money, Jacks R Better or Warbonnet and PerfectTrees.

Not have money, Grand Trunk UL Travel hammock, Whoopie slings, ridgeline and tree huggers, adding 3/4 underquilt purchase and catenary-cut tarp (homemade) and use headnet for bugs. I will add a top quilt, when I can, that may be used for ground-sleeping with a sleeping pad, as well.

That just me.

ya try out warbonnet's hammocks, they're the lightest. or look on hammockforums.net a new guy just made a cuben fiber one thats pretty cool. as far as tarps go thats up to you. i would suggest an 6X8 or 8X10 tarp for hammocking

The Hennessy hammock system is a great way to start hammocking. I still use my Explorer UL asym that I got in 2003, still works great. I did some tweaks, too -- got a different tarp (fly) from Maccat, and replaced the hanging line with straps, but the basic Hennessy system still works.

HH now has a zipper mod on their ultralite . http://hennessyhammock.com/catalogue.html. if you get one get oversize tarp or plan on upgrading. woopie slings for suspension. under and over quilts. take your pick. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pVGC6SYpN7Wa9NJHrtlPjHA&hl=en

Cuben fiber hammock=sweaty butt. It's completely non-breathable.

I had a Hennessy.
Switched to a simple gathered-end hammock with a separate bug netting (Byer with modified suspension and Eagle's Nest Outfitters [ENO]). For a tarp I use my poncho on summer weekends where rain is unlikely, my MacCat standard sized spinnaker tarp when it is likely or on longer trips, and my 10x12 Equinox tarp in the winter to keep the wind off.
I have a rather unique way of using a hammock and sleeping bag which you can see in my photos here at WB.

Many Hennessy users are moving to Warbonnet Blackbirds, but I don't think I've heard of a single Warbonnet user moving to a Hennessy. Buy right or pay twice.

I just made a silnylon hammock, non-breathable like a cuben, and I haven't had any condensation issues with it yet, surprisingly. Haven't had it in hot temps yet, though.

If you have the money for an underquilt, look at JRB for full-length or the Warbonnet Yeti for partial length.

For tarps, there are lots of options. If you want big, go with the JRB 11'x10'. If you want smaller, go with the Warbonnet or a MacCat Deluxe. If you want good protection and good views, get a MacCat Standard.

Started w/ ENO, picked up used HH ULBP (dont like it) Finally purchased Warbonnet Black Bird. Tarps...Gear Guide 9x9 modified, moved to 8'x10' sil tarp, dont care for that so now I will be buying a MacCat Standard in sil. Tried pads for insulation...was OK but now I have a down under quilt. You will hear this same kind of story over and over and over again.

NOT ME. tried one, didn't like it at all. bugnet in the way, foot pocket kicking out from quilt. i don't like Warbonnet Blackbirds, but that's just me. love the superfly.

I agree. You're not likely to go wrong with a Blackbird. I sold my Hennessy and never looked back. The only other hammock I'll use is an ENO Doublenest, my winter hammock when I don't feel like dealing with the bug net.

If you're still looking for inexpensive tarps, I don't think you can go wrong with the Campmor 8x10 silnyl (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___20069)

When you decide make sure to set it up and sleep in the back yard a couple of times. Learn to take it down and pack it in the night.
