I'm looking for the lightest weight hard case for my eyeglasses. I often hike with prescription sunglasses on but still bring along my regular glasses just in case it gets too dark. I would like something as light and protective as possible. Any suggestions?

I am sold on the name brand case from the optician. Dropped the case out of a jacket pocket getting in the truck and slammed the door on it. Gobbed up the hinge, but a new one was gratis. Specs were fine.

I figure I need to be able to fall on it.

I use an old clear plastic prescription bottle...weighs next to nothing and my glasses fit nicely in them....I'm not an "ultralite" kinda guy so I also put extra safety pins, batteries, small LED safety light in there also. Just drop it in the bottom of my pack...never had a problem. cheers.

Throw it up in the air and hit it with a baseball bat - more fun. :)

I use this case from Victorinox: http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Sunglasses-Case/dp/B000FPGXGK

It's not the lightest (somewhere in the 1-2 oz. range), but I have big, wrap-around shades, and they wouldn't fit in anything smaller. Still, the case is great, and I can toss it in my pack without having to worry about my glasses at all.

An empty Slim Jim can. It also holds back up toilet paper next to the glasses.

I had an obsession with this a while back after expensive glasses were crushed inside a rigid case inside a rollaboard suitcase (airline checked luggage).

For $5-$10 depending on markup you can get a pretty good hinged rigid 'clamshell' case, or a zippered semi-rigid case. A loose plastic ziploc baggie or sandwich bag will help protect the lenses from scratching.

Try Amazon, or a large Sunglass Hut if you're at a mall.

Shoulder pockets on backpack straps: yes.

I switched to Transitions Lenses a decade ago so I wouldn't have to carry an extra set of glasses. Now they are either on my head or in the gear loft of my hammock.

Transition lenses suck. They don't work if you wear a hat. Wont work thru the windshield of your car. And dont work in indoor bright lighting even on stage lighting which I am around,,save your money..for cases go to walmart, they have some cheap smallish all sizes of clam shell cases for 3.95 each,,just got 2 for my diff glasses when I wear contacts even..But stay away from transition lenses if your in woods

They certainly don't work for you. I've never had those problems and almost always wear a hat while backpacking. Perhaps the difference is that mine are prescription safety glasses with polycarbonate lenses .. which are much thinner than comparable glass or conventional plastic lenses .. and more expensive. :-?

Love my transition lenses even in the woods. As stated, they don't work too well inside a car when you probably need them the most on a sunny day. :)

If you wear wireframes you can probably find a pair of clipons that will fit your glasses and weight next to nothing. That way, you don't need a hardcase, because your glasses are always on your face and your sunglasses are too cheap to need one. I use a soft case clipped to my pack straps to hold my clipons when I'm not wearing them so they don't get crushed. At night, I put the clipons on my glasses, my glasses in the case and hang the case from a loop in my tent to keep them from getting crushed. My clipons and softcase together weigh exactly one ounce.

I paid 360.00 for my bi focals, thin wire smallish, with transition lenses, cool looking, thin lenses, you can't even tell they are bifocals as there are no lines in the glasses, forget what they call them,,but the transition lenses,,just don't do what I want them to do,,besides,,i weare contacts as well,,so I don't wear the glasses except to give the eyes a break from contacts and when I take them out at nite,,i switch to the glasses again, when I hike tho,,I take it all with me, The clamshell cases I bought at wall mart, which were their smallest, weight 4.3 oz and cost 3.95,,cheap!

I wore transitions on the trial and really liked them. But the presecription changed and I did not do them this time. I am in wire tri-focals,no lines. They are either on me or in the pocket in my tent in a lite pouch I got with them. I now wear the nerdy sunglasses that fit over them. If I were going to thru, I would pony up for prescription sunglasses.
Anyway, get your screws checked and changed before a hike. Sweat is hard on the hinges and screws. I did not think about it until my glasses literally fell apart in my hands after a sweaty hike.
