Just asking for any info about current water conditions at Old Orchard, Wise, Thomas Knob, and Deep Gap. And where is the water at Thomas Knob?

Thanks!

Behind the shelter at T Knob. Suspect they are all good. There is a spring on the southside below the horse trails at Rhododendron Gap.
Headed for the top three this weekend, will let you know.

Although I did not stay at any shelter, I hiked through there last week (May 18) and finding water was not an issue. At Thomas Knob the spring is directly behind the shelter, at a spring several yards down the hill. It is fenced in so that the ponies cannot get to it. Stay very close to the side of the shelter to find the path down. It is not far at all and is the main water source for excellent campsites both before and after the shelter easily seen from the AT if you do not wish to stay at that shelter.

When you are standing at the shelter, you cannot see the spring, but as you approach the shelter along the AT from the south headed north, you can see the fence from the trail.

At streams noted as "unreliable" in the T-H's Handbook, I found no water.

BTW The Partnership shelter has a shower and a large water basin in the rear. It is a newish shelter only a few yards from Park Headquarters. Poor cell phone reception there, but there is a land phone in the nearby office.

I stayed near Thomas Knob shelter about a week ago. The spring behind the shelter was barely running but it's pretty reliable if you have a little patience. It would be a good idea to go ahead and fill up before you get there, though.

The water basis was disconnected / non-functioning and the shower was locked / unavailable for use last October when I stayed at this shelter.
