I don't claim to be an expert, but I think this is the scat from a black bear. Do some of you who are more familiar than I am with bear scat agree?

About two weeks ago a black bear was seen in our neighborhood, but no one has reported seeing it since then. This morning I went to weed eat the tall grass at the back of our lot and discovered a dozen or so piles of scat. I have to believe the bear has been using our yard. We have been out of town, so it could have had it to himself.

A lot of our plants have been eaten. We were blaming it on deer, but I am now thinking it may have been the bear.

If no bear, then what?

No expert here. The bear scat I have seen is "lineless." I have seen funky looking deer poo like that.

Look at your nibbled plants. Look like a deer snipped them?

yup looks like deer droppings. Bear scat has a lot of hair in it.

From this view, you can see how the wildlife get to our back yard. They mostly stay in the woods on the airport property, but travel alongside the beach, then climb up the cliff into our yard.

It is best viewed using the "hybrid" tab: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0tLlE23uHHrLnyvAqgXHzKtqhP5XpPu 7f

Thanks for your input, but I am not yet convinced. We have a lot of deer droppings around here. They usually look like a pile of pellets.

But, I guess you could be right. There have definitely been some deer around too.

This is what deer scat usually looks like. We always have a few piles of it in our yard.

I know this may sound like a dumb suggestion - but have you checked online for images of bear scat?

http://www.bear-tracker.com/blackbearscat.html

This page shows several pictures, It looks like it depends on what they eat.
Yours does look similar to a couple of these pics.

I thought bear poo had more berries in it.

Shutterbug, you live near a beach and get bears?!?!?!?!

Looks like deer to me. Most deer dropping almost resemble rabbit pellets only elongated. Larger deer, usually bucks have the larger clumps.

The berries aren't ripe yet. From what I have observed, bears eat almost anything in the spring and early summer. I have seen them grazing on wild flowers.

When the berries come into season later in July, the bears feast on blue berries, salmon berries and black berries. Once the berry season starts, the bear scat turns blue.

Yes, I live on the shore of Puget Sound -- one of the most beautiful places in the world. Because the shore of Puget Sound has a border of dense vegitation all kinds of wild life migrate along the beach.

Some of the animals I see from my back yard are deer, racoons, bear, seals, sea lions, whales, otters, and coyotes. We see a lot of eagles, osprey, sea gulls, and all kinds of shore birds.

We don't have many large deer in the northwest. Our deer are black tail dear. Most of them are only slightly larger than a dog.

Ok! When I think of the beach I automatically think of Florida. I don't think any bears have been on those beaches!
You have some cool animals running around your neighborhood. We mainly just get deer here. And those are of the Ohio variety. From what I understand a bear did make a run through this neighborhood before I moved in about 11 years ago. But that was also before the largest mall in the South was built here!

Place a ruler beside it and then take a pic. No doubt that we could figure it out then.

See attached pic of Bear scat seen in the Shenandoah last year. How does it compare to your sample?

Thanks for the example. The scat in my yard doesn't look much like your example, but all of the web sites discussing bear scat make the point that it is different depending on the bear's diet. There are a couple of piles that look similar to your picture, but most don't.

I guess I am going to just have to catch the animal in the act. I will start checking during the night to see what is there.

Here is our bear scat pic from the AT. Spring and it had alot of seeds, but I am no expert either. We never saw the bear near Jerry Cabin shelter but were warned about it. Hope this attaches.

from my experiences,

I would think that if you had deer; there wouldn't be bears. IMO, bears and deer don't naturally hang out at the same location.

any bear scat that I have seen has been huge with no doubt that it was bear. that's when I move along to the next mt for tenting.

do bears nibble? don't they trample?

The evidence is mounting. I guess the scat was left by deer. When we got up this morning, our back yard was filled with bucks -- the deer kind.
