Has anyone been on this section lately (July-August 2010) that can give a report on water availability? I know that there are many sources, but I do not know if the dry weather has made water a problem. (This is for Hot Springs to Davenport Gap.) Thank you. :)

I know that going the other way, many springs were dried up last week.

I wonder if anyone online here has an update. I'm heading NOBO from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs in early October.

Thanks,

Beau, I am doing the same route in May, although we are starting at Cosby Campground and hiking up to the AT to Cosby Knob shelter, then through to DG and on to HS. Would love to hear your experiences, particularly as they relate to water and terrain/elevation/difficulty. Thanks!

I went through there the first of October. From Davenport Gap to Standing Bear you will follow Painter's Creek for about a mile, creek was running fine. The bad news is this section has a lot of blow downs. I crawled, climbed under and over a lot of them. SB Grounghog Shelter, Roaring Fork Shelter, and Walnut Mtn. Shelter had water. The water at Walnut Mtn. is a LONG way down the hill from the shelter :)
It was getting scarce to dry from Walnut Mtn. to Hot Springs. This area appeared to have gone with out rain for a long time. I didn't check out Deer Park Mountain Shelter, so I can't speak about the water source at that location. Plenty of water in Hot Springs (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

There is typically plenty of water on this section besides in area like Walnut Mountain. The water there is nasty. You should be fine as long as we dont have a dry winter and basing it on the current conditions, should be fine, probably a couple of inches on the snow in some parts right now. Check back as it gets closer.
