Just a reminder to all that the 2010 ALDHA Gathering is Columbus Day Weekend (October 15, 16, and 17. Put it on your calendar and plan to attend.

The schedule is being posted to the ALHDA website. It's not complete yet and more will be added as we get closer. Check it out at www.aldha.org (http://www.aldha.org).

It's fun weekend! Come and catch up with old friends and make new ones.
Hope to see you there.

There is a correction on the ALDHA Gathering. It's not Columbus Day weekend rather the weekend after, but it's still October 15, 16, and 17.

I live in Chadds Ford , PA . 20 miles west of Philadelphia and 10 miles north of Wilmington , Delaware . Could drive . Have a '96 Dodge Intrepid with the big engine . New tires . Just past inspection . But , it has 146,000 miles . If someone in this area would like to join me , and possibly help with Gas / Tolls , I would be open .

OR :

If there is a chance my car might " die " on a long trip away from home ,
I would also do the reverse . Go with someone else , and pay Gas / Tolls .

From: " Leslie Stoltz "
news about Jim
" Everyone,
With great sadness we share with you news of Jim's death . Jim died at midnight last night [ Sun., 12am 9/5/10 ] . His best friend and former wife Leslie was with him . Jim's health status, including organ failure and extreme difficulty in breathing, detetriorated very very rapidly .

Jim's two sisters and brother are en route to Helena . The shortness of time simply did not allow them to make travel arrangements and complete their journey before Jim died . Jim's inordinately quick death leaves all of us somewhat stunned but such is the nature of cancer .

Jim had a great day Friday . He laughed with those fortunate enough to spend time with him and inspired us as we looked out on a magnificent blue sky and the beautiful Big Belt Mountains . Jim loved the fellowship and deeply valued being part of our community . He was very fond of all of you and found great comfort in your company . Your warmth and welcome gave Jim the community he always wanted and found in the fellowship .

Jim was beloved by all of us and the thousands of children and others with whom he shared his deep understanding, profound respect, and unconditional love of nature .

Jim's body is being cremated per his wishes . A memorial service involving the fellowship is in the offing . As you know, numerous tasks come with Jim's death and will be attended to in the coming days . Of course, we will keep you apprised as things evolve .

All of you made a wonderful difference in Jim's life as he did in ours . We know that Jim's music and friendship will live on in our memories as we turn now to celebrating Jim's life . Be gentle with yourselves and others .

Anyone know the reason the Gathering was changed to the weekend after Columbus Day this year?
I know it has happened before, but I seem to recall it was due to scheduling conflict with Concord's home football schedule.
I just looked at the update on the ALDHA site that lists the saturday restrictions due to a home football game.
No parking on campus, no showers, no space for the Hiker Fair.
No Hiker Fair on Saturday is the real bummer of the bunch, as that was the logical spot to hang out, chat, and run into everyone else.

This seems like alot of hoops to jump through while having to travel all the way to West Virginia for. My RV (large 20 foot van) is my only transportation and I don't appreciate not being to be able to park close to the venue. I also don't like all of the restrictions on the facilities at the college. I thought that they wanted or enjoyed us being there. At least at Gettysburg the reason for inconveniences was construction. I will probably give this one a miss.

WalkinHome:

The College is still, and always has been, a gracious host and a great friend to ALDHA. Unfortunately, the dates for this year's Gathering co-incide with their annual Homecoming weekend, and they expect hundreds and hundreds of visitors for this event, which of course takes precedence over anything else taking place on those days.

There will indeed be some inconvenciences for ALDHA people that weekend, such as restrictions on parking; limited showers; limited access to buildings such as the Student Center; an abbreviated Hiker Fair, etc.

However, I think these problems, tho regrettable, are not insurmountable. I still think it's going to be a great weekend, and I hope to see you there.

if your able to give me a lift to pipestem, i would want to talk about magnets. specificly loadstone and the posibilitys of useing it in a revelutionary way. i have had my illegal aliens who squat in my sub terranian lair working on some ideas concerning rare earth magnets . as well as permenent and some temporary magnet theorys. mainly i belive hydrogen and gold, and possibly a colbolt or other type of magnet can be used in a way as to effect a powersourse witch the size of a washing machine could sit in a ship and propell it limitlessly at speeds nearing light. my idea is based on the vacume of space and the snowline in space causeing sort of roadways thru the empty paths between objects in space.sort of like catching a wave. the ship would atract or not to the emptyest pathways exselerating without limit for a second and shutting down to break near a planet where rockets or just slingshoting and retro rockets would finish the trip. on return the ship simply would need to go to the nearest snowline .??????

i theorize inersia within a sytem of magnetic controled travel has a mechanics so simple and efficient, that it may be able to control the inertia to the higest speeds. by ingauging insulators like a clutch around the device. an navagation i belive would be predetermined and unchangeable based on starting position alone. wanna gather ?

Technically we'll pitch at the Folk Life Center, I suppose. Pipestem is the nearby Park, where people can pitch if they so choose.

But most people will pitch at the Folk Life Center, 'cause that's where Matty'll be.

the stuff i dont know is an unbeliveable list. im not proud but i do benifit from all the freed up space in my mind that dosnt have to concern itself with stuff. see,...stuff aint what makes up the big picture in our wonderful lives. dark matter between the stuff or our spirit, the unconquerable strenth of inner us is what we focus on. but to fill the mind with what i concidered at youth to be not worth learning like spelling and what concord or pipestem are, matter not to me. i just learned in this thread after years of enjoying the place, what its all called. but then i dont use maps on the east coast. its sort of taboo. it insults us to map across the land thru towns and billions of easy to follow points. out west we need maps. in big places with not but carins and crap pointing the way thru more wild lands. i envy and study ancient mans abilitys to not map. i also like the way they didnt starbucks up the place. this pipestem(useing the term as a date or time) i plan on cuddeling up close to tanks intelegence to see if hes nice or just a brain on a meany.im all beat up from my dummy friends like the dude and his weird theorys that metalica is a religion. lol.

I'm hoping that, as the facilities at the college are limited, they move as many non-workshop things as possible to the campground. Ride board, silent auction, apple & photo contests. Not sure how much room is available -- but it would certainly make more sense to have the sort of "hiker central" area usually located at the college moved to the Folk Life Center.

As long as presenters don't need electricity some classes could be held at the campground. Just form a circle around the presenter, bring your own chair. Its easier than driving all the way into the college and you don't have to worry about parking.

Classroom space isn't an issue, and I think the idea is to keep all of the classes close to one another, so you can go from one to the next quickly.

I say we rent a few big party tents. Everybody bring their own chair and we hold our classes room seminars in them. Presenters would be required to bring their own soap box. It'd be just like the old time tent revival. Heck Baltimore Jack would love it, him being a preacher and such. We could use the tents in Billville for the smaller more 'intimate';) seminars. I’m sure we could run electric to those in need and while we're at it why not throw in a good old fashion southern barbecue to boot.

The Gathering is an all volunteer event put on by ALDHA, an all volunteer non-profit organization. If you're willing to help the event come off as smoothly as we all like it to, please get in touch with me.

We can use volunteers to help out at any of these areas:

Registration - meet and greet hikers as they arrive
Campfire - make sure the fire gets started, stays under control, and you get to stay warm in the process.
Techies - if you can figure out any dvd, laptop, and think you're as smart as the "smart rooms" at the college, we can probably use your help :-)
Sign hangers - we may need help posting signs on campus
Other - who knows where else we'll also need help?

Thanks so much!

Yeah, it is. The trail is over 2000 miles long, the Country is about 4000 miles wide. In the scheme of things in the US, 100 miles is nothing! I drive twice that far to maintain a section of the NCT.

I didn't know where the gathering was when I clicked on this thread. I was thinking that maybe I would go if it was a bit closer to NJ than trail days(I could be wrong but it seems like these are two of the bigger AT get togethers). 100 miles is fairly close when you consider the AT stretches 2200 miles.

Got it, guys. Distance is relative. Then again, if you're using the trail as a metric, The Gathering is rather close. 9 hours instead of five months? Yes?

But take heart! Hopefully (and no word yet on this) the Gathering will be back in Gettysburg, which should be much closer for Joe. Hope to see you then!

Oh no Red Hat, your playin ball with us. You and Marta. You can knit us some mitten's later around the bonfire as Matty paints campfire portraits and Jack baffles newbies with his BS. Anyone heard if we can do any programs in the large common room at the folk life center? Would be nice.

OK, who are you and what have you done with our Matthewski?

if you walked in to this store, not only would you be in a place exactly decorated in early cammo jack, but you would look at this guy, he at you, nothing would be said. words would not form on your now stunned lips. deep in your brain an erie feeling bomb would detonate spreading its eri around in a wirlwind of not understandingness that would engulf you and floor you. you both would imediatly point out," um, you look and act and are way too much like me,..whats up?" to witch the guy would respond," who the hell is your mother?" and if by chance they have the same names,....well,....i found your bro dude.you owe me if hes nice. youll know him, hes a larger you with a gimpy leg. the decor of the store and him in it almost make this place a must see stop for any hiker friends of cammo jack john vose. not kidding folks. this is way better than eastern penetentuary.very upseting and dizzying and slightly nauseating but most unexsplainable. i belive just showing the man a pic of jack would start his curiosity to the point where he might visit jack and freak him out on his own turf. but i highly recomend this side stop at front street and snyder ave.

Is it too late to chicken out on giving the presentation that Otto told me I had to do?
I'm not blaming him, he was real polite when he asked and it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Now that the time is 36 hours form now. I'm not so sure.

It is homecoming weekend at Concord University.
Not sure who planned that conflict.

Does anyone know how much it costs to get into the stadium there to watch the game?
Since ALDHA no longer posts the schedule in advance, that might be the most interesting thing going on at 3:30 saturday afternoon.

Funniest thing on the ALDHA site referencing the fact that due to homecoming, campus will be more crowded that in years past...
" Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. on Saturday for the football game that students and alumni are flocking to the school for. It should run about 3 or 3.5 hours. Plan accordingly.
.. There may or may not be a long line for meals at the college dining hall on Friday and Saturday. Be prepared. Consider cooking and eating at the campsite before heading to the school early Friday evening. And perhaps pack a bag lunch for Saturday."

Maybe they do things differently at Concord, but who eats at the dining hall when they go to a football game?
I'm fairly sure the rest of the college football watching world tailgates.

In spite of the conflict with homecoming, it was a great gathering. Saw lots of friends (except Matty who doesn't exist except in my mind), saw great presentations, ate some good food, and can't wait for the next one.

arrived pipestem and the folklofe center at 549 am sat morn.tank drove well and delivered me to my peeps with out a hitch. except for the section south of roanoke. he made me hitch cause he wanted some time with his imagination. then, after going thru all the personal items in fols tents that were left unattended, and after much journel copying,...i now have secrets that can ruin or make each and every one of you. some of the sex toys found in slys tent alone, and the fact that they were all inscribed, with love jack,..made me queezy. i found some kind of millitary opps black opps medical testing lab under the back seat of rocs car and now understand his interest in being alda board. tricks had playboys all doctored up with marys face drawn in on the bodys. jester has a secret so awful i allmost cant misspell it correctly. hes a robot! theres a place in his truckbed with an impression of jester and some kind of bio goo recharging goes on. it said on the side, jester model 2002333 ! and it had inseption dates!jester is only 3 years old! we are in some deep stuff folks. we need to run. and dont stop. billville may actually be killville! other than that i had fun.

Back in Hanover after a month away, quick report:

*Attendance at Gathering was not so great, but the ones taking place in mid-
Atlantic locations always seem to do better; we were kinda far south.
*The event was great fun; we had beautiful weather; all in all it was a great
weekend.
*Gonna be back in New England next year at the Massachusetts College of
Liberal Arts in North Adams, MA, which is great news, especially for those
of us who live up North and miss the Gatherings in Hanover, etc.
*Among other great news (and other good people), both Jester and our own
Sgt. Rock were elected to help serve on the ALDHA membership board.

Oh, and did I mention that Miss Janet announced that as of mid-February, she's gonna be thru-hiking?

In short, it was a great weekend all arou nd, and well worth the time and travel; sure hope to see lots of you in a year in North Adams.

Just to follow up on what Jack has mentioned here...

The 2011 Gathering is indeed set for the trail town of North Adams, Mass., on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 7-9.

The preliminaries have been posted on www.aldha.org (http://www.aldha.org) and more will follow.

For now, talk it up with your friends, and especially with next year's thru-hikers. It will be an ideal spot for some of them to hit on their way home after they've finished their thru-hikes.

AND, they can take care of all their "official paperwork" at next year's Gathering to have their hike recorded with the ATC. If they do it by Friday afternoon at the Gathering, they'll be called up on stage Friday night to receive their official ATC 2,000-miler certificate and patch, PLUS they'll receive the first-ever ALDHA certificate and patch (brand new) congratulating them on their thru-hikes or end-to-end completion.

The new brochure has been posted, so head to www.aldha.org (http://www.aldha.org) for a copy.

And if you'd like to do a program at the Gathering, like a workshop on a trail you've hiked or a subject that's dear to your heart, hit me up at gathering@aldha.org.

Thanks!
Bill O'Brien
Program coordinator
