Ok, so i just got back in June from a 6 week hike and in all I probably hiked/backpacked 2.5 months last year.

Today I floated the plans I have for the coming year by my wife, namely hike the BMT and as much of the MST as I have time for.

She smiled and said, "Just be sure to leave me the credit card."

I can't figure out if she's supportive or trying to get rid of me!! :)

(But seriously, I thank my lucky stars for having a spouse that supports my interests)

My spouse of 30 years need only look at me and she knows what I'm thinking about without asking: either backpacking, soccer, the injury I'm recuperating from at the time, or work (males are pretty simple-minded, I know).

Supportive if she's looking at female camping gear.
Getting rid of you if she's looking at pool boys and cruise lines.

Good luck!

She is probably deep down relieved since you're not out cheating (since who would cheat with a smelly hairy hiker), you're not out drinking (it's too heavy to carry) and she doesn't have to pick up your dirty underwear and socks, make your meals and wait on you. :D
Sounds like she is going to pursue what she wants - since you are going out to do what she wants and leaving her on her own. BTW, it's probably too late in the game to become even remotely critical of what she wants to do on her own while you are out hiking :-?

My spouse of 38 years tells me.....don't come back a day before planned....in other words...if you plan a 7 day trip...you had better be gone 7 days!!!!!

Many perfectly good marriages have been ruined by people coming home early from work without calling first . . .

No, you should not be worried at all. Hiking is statistically MUCH safer than a relationship!

But only 10 - 20% of thru-hikers get to the end! Relationships can end at ANY time!

Well, I'm pushing 50 years old and we've been married 22 years this October.

If I don't trust her by now (and she me) it ain't never going to happen and going on a hike sure isn't going to change anything. Plus, jealousy and possessiveness doesn't really look good on a grownup.

That's how I look at it. :)

25 years here and she just looks at me and said "can you find a place to shower before you come home...." :D

Is that 10-20% of relationships? Didn't you just compare apples to apples?
